it literally reminds me of some stupid thing the ACC would come up with. water polo is much more interesting and they have fixed it where the horses dont drown now

because they are popular on a global scale. Just because they aren't prevalent in American doesn't mean anything about the other 95% of the worlds population.

Bingo! After living abroad, it’s amusing to see how insulated many peoples opinions are in the US. Outside the US, the most popular sports are of course, soccer, plus boxing, mma, cricket, rugby and many racquet sports.

It’s soccer and nothing else is remotely close on the world stage.
Also after understanding the Champions League and what it takes to qualify you truly end up with a true world champion.
Not sure how the NFL, NBA and MLB proclaim world championships when they play in the US. Canada would figure in in baseball and hockey but still a far cry from world champions.

I mostly agree with your post, but boxing and tennis is extremely popular around the world. I even saw tennis courts in Nicaragua. Rugby is gaining lots of traction also

Yea there is definitely popular world wide sports but when talking the most popular, soccer is on another level. It’s gaining traction in the US but unless they can get more monies to bring over the top tier guys like Messi then it will remain far down the list. I enjoy soccer but even watching MLS vs the Premier League or Liga it’s not even close quality wise.

That it’s popular worldwide and in many countries. One of the most widespread sports. Yet it’s not THE #1 sport in any country. Closest would be Serbia because of Djokovic but even then soccer still edges it there.

The first modern Olympics in Greece 1896. 241 athletes in 43 events in 9 sports and all were men. At the time, there was only 2 medals awarded (no gold). However the IOC has gone back and awarded 3 medals in each event.
The second Olympiad in 1900 had the first women participate in Paris in 5 events. 997 athletes (22 women) in 95 events in 19 sports. The Olympic events were spread over 5 months as part of the World's Fair in Paris
The 33rd Olymiad in 2024 in Paris has 10,721 athletes (men, women, them, they, etc.) participating in 329 events in 32 sports.

I had handball on for a few minutes. My son (23) walked through the room and commented: "That's just stupid. Could you imagine a handball team of just NFL QB's? They would just laser it from one end to the other!"
