Swinney praises dominant offensive line, sophomore tackle Jackson Carman

Clemson’s offensive line has been outstanding through the season’s first three games according to head coach Dabo Swinney. The top-ranked Tigers are 3-0 and are one of the few teams in the country averaging over 250 yards per game through the air and on the ground. Full Story »

I’ve said it before. THis sophomore class could have 4 top ten draft picks if they all turn pro together. Carman is a beast.

Really?

Don’t get me wrong, I’m a big fan and grateful for the team.

I also realize that part of the protocol today is that coaches gush over everything. It’s especially true when they speak about the other team (see Coaches overview of Charlotte today), lest they give them any extra motivation. And the style today for most coaches is they also speak overwhelmingly positive about their own team/performance (this is a departure from previous years).

In the case of Clemson, everything the coaches say has been such. But, per this article, I question whether that can recall by said for the offensive line run game. They overwhelmed GT. But I have not seen the consistent driving run game against A&M and SU that I think it’s going to take to keep the pressure off our passing attack come playoff time. I hope we can get that back.

How about the great pass protection??? Is the o-line only good for the run game? If a team is determined to stop the run, then your o-line needs to give the qb enough time to pass. Our o-line has done that! C’mon man.

Yes, I specifically called out the run game.

But since you mentioned it, the pass protection has been ok, not stellar.

2 sacks (including 1 intentional grounding when trevor was outside the pocket) and 3 hurries in three games is just ok pass protection? You can at least try to do a little research, before criticizing a national championship coaching staff that has blown out its first three opponents.

Brad Brownell: more losses than any other coach in school history.

My only nitpicking criticism is Pollard's snaps are too high.

It’s skewed. The meaningless big run on the last offensive play drove the average up this past game.

We did not gash them with steady runs like we did vs. GT. And against TAM, we certainly couldn’t open up holes.

I’m not buying the claim that both TAM and SU stacked against the run. We are too balanced for them to do that. The difference in these last two games is this: we had to pass because we couldn’t establish the run. That’s very different than setting up the pass by running successfully.

A 57 yard td by our 3rd string freshman runningback signals that we have a very strong running game , not the opposite .
Did you miss the part where we are averaging over 250 on the ground through 3 games , against all Power 5 teams ?
Having trouble with why that isn't impressive to you . Care to elaborate ?

I would suggest average rushing yards after 3 games is not a good indicator of how consistently a team is running the ball. Case in point: 411 yards rushing against GT. 121 against TAM.

The average of those two games is misleading. We were unable to run the ball against TAM.

I want to avoid being critical, BUT Clemson has punted a lot in this young season. They have good cumulative rushing yards, but not on third down. Etienne has been stellar, but he's been boxed in on a large number of runs. Opposing defensive play calling has much to do with that, but OL also has a part in it. They've been great in pass-blocking. Opening gaps for runners has been inconsistent.

If someone wants to suggest an Achilles heel with the Tigers (the OL is not a major issue), Trevor Lawrence seems to be on a gunslinger mission, empowered by his success. Whether it's 3rd and 3 or 3rd and 10, a deep sideline jump ball is probably not the best option (1st or 2nd down, sure, given the talent). And, of course he's made 3 or 4 really bad throws, in addition to the brilliant ones.

Without Renfro, Clemson has to develop a quick passing game across the middle to keep linebackers and safeties out of the backfield...and convert on third down. If the OL is as good as Dabo portrays it, creating that buffer in the middle will display it.

There's some truth here. I too think we need more consistency in the run game. We seem to be starting slow, then using the pass to set up the run. To be truly dominant, it should be the other way around.

I'm waiting for a third and five where we run a counter, or even straight power.

Once we have that on film, tendencies will be impossible for other teams to scheme against.

Do I think we'll get there? Yes.

Top to bottom, this is a better team than last year.

I trust the process to work like last year, improving through the season, building depth, and have a team ready to run through the playoff.

Back to Back

Go Tigers!

Carman is manhandling D-linemen . He's been phenomenal . Big big change from where he was last year behind Mitch .

Carman was a HUGE and unexpected signing. We were runner up on what seemed like every 5 star lineman to Uga that year.

So, because I just joined the board and started making comments, that makes me less credible? You know nothing about me. Is one only allowed to give gushing praise here?

Are only the comments from those in the thousands to be highly regarded? That’s pretty arrogant.
