It's not fair. I tell ya. I was telling my boss and coworkers that l have jury duty coming up. And after they finished laughing, they all said that none of them had the "pleasure" themselves.

What the.....

As soon as the lawyers figure out that you’re educated, you’ll be tossed by peremptory challenge.

Well I have been in the jury pool umpteen times. But I have only been picked once. Usually I have been lucky enough to be sent home first day for good.

Man, I am hoping for this again. Maybe if l mumble to myself.

coworkers got summoned into the same jury pool many years ago. Not only did we all get picked for a jury, we all got picked for the SAME jury, on a check cashing fraud trial. But, we must have looked tough once the trial started, the defendant changed her plea to guilty during our lunch break.

:)

Depends on where you are located. That was my experience in Atlanta - if you had ever driven by a college you would not be picked.
I had very different experience in Washington, DC. Was once on a jury for a murder trial in DC that included 4 (of 12 jurors) who were lawyers. You cannot swing a cat in DC without hitting a lawyer, so I guess they had no choice. Also got called every 2 years like clockwork for jury duty. I guess that is what happens when you have lots of criminals and not a huge population. The metro area has a large population (6.36 million) but the District of Columbia itself has less than 700,000.

By the way, hung jury due to one person, even though there was a jailhouse confession to another inmate, video, and witness (who had known the accused since childhood) testimony. SMH.

I found that declaring that I can determine guilt or innocence by how far apart the defendant’s eyes are usually does the trick. HTH 😉

listening to people's stories of why they don't need to be there, and best of all, the $13 check for your trouble. Hope your work pays you for the day or days.

Even funnier was they told us not to bring our cell phones. I left mine in my car 3 blocks away in a parking garage like a dummy. I saw a bunch of people looking at their phones.

I took my hearing aids out and left them in the car and just sat there. Would ask a question and the person next to me would tell me what they asked. I was sent home. Worked like a champ. Now the only thing I need to do if I get called again is bring a letter from my doctor with all of my health conditions and I will get sent home again and hopefully flagged to never have to set foot in a court room again.

The lawyers will not select any

3

Mar 3, 2023, 7:55 PM [ in reply to Gotta love the hours of waiting, ]

Juror who appears to have a grain of sense. Depending on the case, if it’s a civil matter, they will likely select a juror who they are convinced has no knowledge of anything! The lawyers like to see which of them is the brightest and have no interest in their client. It’s a game they play. Watch closely during jury selection, which can last hours, and see how they do things. In my career I have been to trial many, many times as an expert witness and it becomes almost comical. You do not want to be selected to sit on a jury. That is a definite slam on your intelligence. Be your normal intelligent self in jury selection and you will be sent home. I promise.

Lawyers will (almost) never allow an intelligent person on the jury. I'm an architect and have served in the pool several times, all on civil cases regarding this builder/contractor and this client/owner, etc. If I didn't know either, I knew the lawyer, or had worked for him, for either party and was immediately excused. The concept of a "jury of your peers" is a nice idea, but not very relevant to reality. A "peer" is simply a fellow citizen, not a similar professional. In the end, I guess it's a pretty good system.... God Bless America, and

I've served on 2 juries. One civil. One criminal.

I was happy to do so and was glad I did, both times. Have been subpoenaed twice for grand jury, but both times was excused because of the length of duty and my job.

One yr I got called for general sessions, civil court and federal courts...all in a 6 month span. Only has to serve on one case. It was a purse snatching case. Man had snatched an old ladies ..about 80 yrs old..purse and workers at walmart chases him and caught him. When young public defender ask the lady...you only has $3 in purse. She stared him down..leaned forward and said...but by God it was my 3 dollars. Guilty!!

Getting out of criminal is super easy. When asked if you can make a fair and impartial decision, the answer is "No sir. The police only arrest guilty people."
To get out of civil you have to claim religious prohibition against civil suits.

Oh my gosh, reynolds357, I wish I had thought about this excuse for criminal trials years ago before I was summoned for jury duty so many times! I know it's our civic duty, but the criminal case I was selected for was not fun.

I have seen some crazy excuses work over the years. When you say that you can't make an impartial decision due to L.E. bias, they have no legal choice but to dismiss you. Unless they want the case tossed on appeal.

The last time I received a notice for the duty sent the judge a letter stating loss of 40% hearing in one ear and 20% in the other. Said I would be ready to serve but would likely hear only about 60% of conversations and had no aids. Even though I didn't have the required Dr's statement included a copy of a two year old hearing test and noted I would age out of selections in six months anyway. Was excused.
