I am starting to feel as if we lost what made us Unique.

Sep 17, 2021, 12:14 PM

Maybe I'm wrong, maybe a bit too old school, but I feel as if the football program has evolved and modernized in ways that i feel might be slightly negative over the long haul. Many may and likely will disagree and that is fine, flame away. Here is my thought however. A few seasons ago I recall it coming out that when fall camp started, all of the players basically signed off of social media. The focus was on game one and every game after. Other programs might have kids tweeting, gramming, whatever, but the Power Rangers and others stayed the course and stayed focused. Fast forward to last season and between social justice, covid and whatever else, social media stayed on. Does that have anything to do with the lack of an offensive line push or DE production? Not really, but as a whole things just felt different and the product on the field HAS been different I think most would agree. Many of us saw the signs early in the season and kept whistling past the graveyard. Now to this year, with NIL, players needing their "Brand" and social media following to be strong for more $ I fear that horse is never going back to the barn. None of this means that we can't still hit those highest goals again, but it does feel as if some of the small things that made the program stand apart are now gone. Just my .02 cents. Go Tigers!

It was my understanding that the turning off of social media came from the senior leadership of the players on the team each of those years and not the coaching staff. It sure was a way for the team to let their talking be reserved for the field where it was going to be settled any way. Go Tigers.

I just want to say this bc folks keep bringing up how special the power rangers were. The atmosphere in college FB changes every year, just as the HS talent changes every year. And I don't think that we have one coach that is capable of performing miracles, even though at times it seems that they have.

The power rangers were a special talented group of guys that came in together, or just a year apart. And they became a nasty group that played with bad intentions together. And we have to keep in mind that a group of talented players coming out of HS this year, they maybe better than the group last year, or they could be not as good. 4 and 5 star talent from year to year are sometime better, and sometimes they're not as good, and that is what Dabo talks about all the time, every year is like starting over every single year in college FB.

I do believe that as long as Dabo is our, Tiger Nation HC, he will put a good team on the field every year. He may not put a NC winning team on the field every year, but we will have a top 10 team, and it wasn't that long ago that Tiger Nation would given just about anything to have a top 10 team on a yearly basis, but we have been better than a Top 10 team, we have been a team that has played in 6 straight playoff games, and we have won the NC twice, and we have been the runner up 3 times. From where we came from before Dabo, and where we've been since Dabo, every fan base but a couple would trade places with us in a heart beat. So just appreciate what we have, and where we are, nothing has gone away, everything is still in front of us, Go Tigers!!!

In previous years, the players decided

Sep 17, 2021, 12:46 PM

to not be on social media. Dabo supported their decision, just as he did last year when they decided to remain on social media.

I wish he would make it a team rule not to be on social media during the season. Nothing good comes from it as it relates to the players and their role as students and athletes.

However, with NIL now, I suspect that players are expected/required by those paying their endorsement deals to have a consistent social media presence. A rule or decision prohibiting them from being on social media would likely hurt their endorsement potential, and would thus hurt Clemson in the recruitment of players who have NIL deals in their sights.

Judge I believe you are correct. If Johnny 5 star dosnt take a selfie and post it on Twitter while drinking a Dr Pepper, leg pressing at a certain gym and wearing the right tee shirt then no cash, and if that is the team rule, they will go elsewhere.

What weak loser does leg press????? Real men do squats and deadlifts, leave the machines for everyone else. If it’s easy, take a pass—- a 500lb leg press is a joke compared to a 225+ squat.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Judge, you are correct.

Sep 17, 2021, 10:28 PM [ in reply to In previous years, the players decided ]

The team will never again banish social media, the more followers, the more posts, the more money. Therefore every platform is now an opportunity for monetary gain.

The best I could see is if or when we make the playoffs, the team makes a pact to stay off the week prior to the game to let them focus on the game. But that said, their SM will never be turned off. They will have agents, family, friends, or whoever posting for them on their acct even if they are actually not the person sending new content.

OP, unfortunately the old school college/player atmosphere, the days of things staying the same, the days of players playing with hopes of making a future football career, playing for love of the sport and a college degree, all that has changed the day NCAA gave carte blanche to all NIL opportunities. Now there are players making more annually than their position coach and this NIL biz is just cranking up. I could see some players just retiring from college and not even trying to play in the NFL.

The college football that we loved as alumni and fans will be a shell of what we grew to love in the next 5yrs. I seriously think there will be a facet of schools who don't want to compete in this NIL world, don't want to compete with cheating, recruiting, stealing players, crazy Portal antics, etc, and that group of schools just break off and create their own new division and live with football rules from the past. Too much disparity for small schools or schools in small markets to ever be competitive in this new era, and Clemson may very well fall victim of this being in the corner of a small state in a small town. Only so many Bojangles in Clemson.

I feel like Clemson, and our current staff, will adjust as well as anyone to the new dynamics that NIL has brought on. However, I would say that it is exactly those little things that make Clemson so special that kind of transcend these continuous waves of change in college football. We've been counted down and out, along with the ACC, numerous times over the decades as the game and all its trappings have grown exponentially. Yet here we are.

Go Tigers.

my years at Clemson were the '66-'70 season. The only thing special about the last three of those seasons was that they ended. I'll take this modern anytime.

You are correct. College Football has changed. The portal, NIL and society in general. Clemson always had the small town feel which was a advantage. But now that players are getting paid that can hurt the small low key colleges. Players need attention to make money, tweets and number of followers etc. The game has changed and most people don't realize it.

Just another adjustment for coaches. Any coach who is 50 can tell you how different it is today than it was 20 years ago. Any coach who is 60 can tell you how different it was 30 years ago.

The teams that prosper in the NIL transition time will be the teams where the coaches do the best job handling their players in the NIL issues.

I've already heard one coach (sorry, don't remember who) said it this way, "I have to convince my players the best way to prosper from the NIL is to be the best player possible. The better you play, the more money you will make. It's the same thing as going to the NFL. The more you impress the scouts the higher you will be drafted and the more money you will make. Same with NIL. The better you play the more you will impress those guys deciding who to give NIL money to."

Now, we will see which coaches can get the kids to understand that and buy into it and take ownership of it.

I follow some of our players on social media. They are not spending that much time on it based on what I have seen--not enough to affect their games.
