Jounge advice and pole sharing

Dec 1, 2016, 12:48 PM

sorry... POLL. yeah, poll.

So, I am in Lexington, SC (near cootlumbia), and have lived the past decade with no internet service at my house other than my cell phone. I think my only options are time warner, direct/dish/satellite, and MAYBE AT&T or Windstream, but I'm pretty sure it's just satellite and Time Warner. I have been wanting to get a home wifi network set up and get the TV going htpc style with Antenna, Amazon, Netflix, and my friend's WatchESPN code... maybe even throw in some KODI/EXODUS side action... but alas, I have just heard one horror story after another about dealing with Time Warner and how they are ungodly expensive and even if you get in at a decent rate, they just keep trying to raise your rate without even notifying you, throttling your speed, telling straight up lies when "negotiating", and I'm not the type to handle such things peacefully... SO- I came to the Jounge in search of infinite wisdom (and a bewb gif or two, thanks tickle it).

So, today I come to you requesting that you "share in my pole", which will be conducted by the following rulez-

reply with the following subject:
INTERNET PROVIDER, speed in mb/sec., cost/month
inside post will be: whether the rate is promotional and will go up before you end your contract, and a review of satisfaction with service/horror stories. Also, bewbs if you're into that sort of thing...

example-
subject=Time Warner, 30, $60
inside post= They snuck into the back seat of my parked car and surprise butt fugged me when I got in after a long day of work. Maybe not exactly, but that's what it felt like when they raised my rate from $60 to $150 without even notifying me and then told me I had to pay that month's bill even if they lowered it after that. I burned down their headquarters and am posting from federal pound me in the asss prison.

promotional rate, $60 in a few months.

I heard the speed could be faster if they replace my modem with a newer model, but I have not scheduled that yet.

I stream netflix, PlaystationVUE, WatchESPN, etc

Correct me if I am wrong, but streaming needs about 5mb/s

down. Mine has 60mb/s down (supposedly) which is plenty good for streaming.

AT&T, 18, $69.50

Dec 1, 2016, 12:58 PM

This is my only option other than satellite. I want cable b/c it is cheaper and faster. I hate AT&T like lakebum does. They will have a cheaper intro rate with a large cancellation fee. They may throw mud all over your brand new driveway and you may have to harass them to get a bill credit for the destruction they caused. They will make no effort to fix your driveway.

Charter, 30Mb, $40

Dec 1, 2016, 1:00 PM

It's quoted at 60 MB a month but I've pinged multiple times at it's more like 30. Kinda like how amplifiers advertise peek wattage.

After contract ends it goes to $60 a month.

also YW and here's some more.

ATT 30 $40

Dec 1, 2016, 1:03 PM

Promotional rate for 24 months. I've run speed tests over wifi that show I'm getting 28mbps down and 2mbps up. Service has been fine. Haven't had to deal with their famous customer service yet.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I had them every other year between switching from them to

Dec 1, 2016, 1:05 PM

Charter when promotions expired. Their customer service was not that bad compared to other internet service providers. Take that for what it's worth, cause they'll still screw something up.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I was having trouble with my modem cutting out and

Dec 1, 2016, 1:12 PM [ in reply to ATT 30 $40 ]

requested a new one. Charter lady said, "whoa there little cowboy, let's act like journalists used to and dig a little deeper here..." Guy comes out, determines the problem is the cable in the wall, replaces a bunch of fitting and stuff, moves access to new room, profit. No charge.

They'll probably dig up my driveway or something outrageous now that I've said semi nice things about them.

I don't really keep up with the mps stuff, I'll just say whatever I get is plenty good for my needs.

onliest thing I think I have ever streamed other than YouTube videos are Clemson away baseball games on ESPN3 (I'm at all the home ones). And they play on my 60" TV in near-HD quality.
