Joel Klatt complete evisceration of USC this morning on

Nov 16, 2020, 10:30 AM

Outkick.

Said no self respecting coach with any real aspirations would go to that program, will never be more than the 2nd best team in their own state. Was a pretty spot on rant he went on for about 2-3 minutes about how mediocre a job it really is and should be satisfied with just being OK. It was fantastic, look it up if you have time :)

As much as I hate that program and he is probably right. No one should ever just accept being OK. I'm sure ######### Klatt said that about us after we fired Bowden. Or someone did. Yet... here we are.

We weren't some perennial powerhouse before Dabo came into the fold. Yet we are now. Do I think UofSuck will get there? Probably not, but who knows...

Someone may have said that about us, but the two

Nov 16, 2020, 10:37 AM

situations are not and were not comparable. Back in 2008 Clemson still had history, a national championship banner, bowl wins, and we were definitely not the 2nd best team in our state.

I agree, and at the very least they haven't been OK overall under Muschamp. They went 28-30 under him, and were only 19-26 if you take away their 9-4 season during his 2nd year there. They were 6-13 since the start of last season, and 6-14 overall over their last 20 games. 11 of those 14 losses were by 10 or more points, and 8 by 20 or more.

I could understand the argument of them being just OK if they had fired a guy for going 8-4 or 9-3 each season, but that's simply not the case here.

We weren't a powerhouse but we were certainly way better off then chicken tech has ever been.

The coots have a wild behavior of both expecting too much without working/building for success.

We have always been a "better than expected/return on investment" football program at a school which football matter but so does the entire culture/experience. And really, without the advent of the FSU interregnum that delayed basically every ACC team until the new blood happened, we were never "out of it". It took us a while to rebuild, but a 20 year rebuild is starting to become the norm. Looking at Miami, Nebraska, Texas, Tennessee (even alabama was 15 years 1992-2007)... maybe FSU, USC etc. Jawja has been doing it for 40+

I disagree about being ok. If the program is dead or close to it, being OK is a good goal. Tommy, while always being 7/9 wins at least brought some excitement while building. We had to become "ok" first and then that laid the foundation for future success.

But this is the coots problem... they can't even build to a mid-level Tommy Bowden sustained success. They can even get "ok" right and thus success is always ephemeral. They are just the inverse of Auburn - sometimes bad, often horrible.

All that may be true, but if you remember, similar things

Nov 16, 2020, 10:38 AM

were being said about Clemson in the wake of Bowden being relieved. Although they didn't say we didn't have ANY success, they said that we should be content with 8-9 win seasons, as that was our ceiling, and there was nothing to draw a topnotch coach or talent to Clemson, SC.

I would say, they were wrong about us.

It would take someone with a singular, different vision, but there is no inherent reason why a program could NOT be built in Columbia, SC. The SEC has several successful programs in smaller environments. Remember, that was what the Ole Ball Sac first said, "Why not us?" And, if he had not already been on Social Security when he started, who knows, he may have sustained it for awhile. But, no doubt, they are way behind the 8-Ball right now, and for the foreseeable future financially. It's gonna take a huge financial input from those booze swilling big donors of the Cockaboose Railroad and beyond to make them viable.

Joel Klatt couldn't be more wrong about that

Nov 16, 2020, 10:49 AM

UofSuCk is at best the 3rd best team in their own state. He obviously forgot about Coastal Carolina. If Citadel played more games this year, they would probably be better than UofSuCk as well, but it's tough to judge based on their 2020 season.

Spurrier gave them a taste of the big time but his legacy probably does more harm than good because it elevates expectations to an unachievable level for the fan base. As long as Dabos around they are going to be lucky to be an 8 win team, and that's their ceiling. Most times they are going to struggle to be .500.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

SC has a lot of cultural issues no doubt, but that attitude is

Nov 16, 2020, 11:08 AM

ridiculous. There’s no reason the fans should just accept being this bad. I think they need to stop being so desperate to be great RIGHT NOW...throwing money at old legends... and get someone in there that can establish a positive culture over a few years...right now they have a horrible culture and no identity...or at least not a positive one.

Coots been playing football for nearly 140 years

Nov 16, 2020, 11:48 AM

And they are barely a .500 team. That fan base's utterly ridiculous belief that they are somehow a football power is why they are such a miserable lot. You could say, well spurrier showed them what they could be! The reality is, spurrier didnt do anything! The sec east was a complete dumpster fire, clemson was starting over, and he still only won the east ONE TIME! And got curb stomped in the title game. You have to wonder, why dont these clowns know their roll in the hierarchy of college football? Kentucky fans dont act this way. Vandy fans don't act this way. Wake forest fans, kansas fans, so on and so forth.

Re: Coots been playing football for nearly 140 years

Nov 16, 2020, 1:31 PM

I wouldn't downplay what Spurrier did quite that much. They were certainly helped by the East being bad, but they had 3 straight 11 win seasons, and won a bowl game in 4 straight years. We were rebuilding at the start of their run over us, but we actually played in the ACC Championship game the year they won the 1st of their 5 straight over us. During their 3 straight 11 win seasons Clemson went 10-4, 11-2, and 11-2, and we won bowl games over LSU and Ohio State. So it wasn't like they were beating a bunch of 7-5 Clemson teams during all of those years.

Now, they certainly didn't win anything during those years in terms of championships, but they were pretty darn good during those 3 seasons at least.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Just playing the other side of the argument...

Nov 16, 2020, 11:48 AM

the job still has potential...a fan base that shows up, great home field advantage, rich recruiting area and the current state of the SEC East is influx...

- UK has shown to be very average in Stoops 7th or 8th year (doubtful they are a threat ever)
- Vandy is the same team they have always been
- Missouri has no advantage over you and not real threat
- UT is arguably just as bad right now and has real advantage to curb your future success
- UGA is obviously recruiting at a high level and alot to overcome here but their offense is very average once again and always the chance to beat them with the right recipe
- Florida if on a roll right now and you'll always be chasing them.

Bottom line, with the right coach who progresses each season (on field and recruiting), you can be a perennial top 25 team and have a shot to get those wins against UGA/UF and get into the SEC title game. Its not impossible.

Winning a title there seems to be a stretch but you never know. There are better jobs that'll open but its not a dead end job...unless the expectations get you first (which is most likely to happen).

Slirier could and did promise a recruit two Heisman votes to come to SC. Can't be done now.

SCar is not the 2nd best team in the state of South Carolina.

They are probably like 3rd or 4th or 5th.
