Jeff Scott is struggling in Recruiting at USF

Feb 4, 2022, 4:58 PM

First off, I Support JS, I'm really pulling for him to get usf on the right track...he a good man and coach....no hate here.

But part of South Fla reasoning behind hiring Jeff Scott was his reputation as a great recruiter....of course they didn't expect top 20 classes but They thought he'd get them back to the days of Willie Taggart where they finished first in their conference in recruiting and having top 40 or 50 classes in the country.....but that's just not happening...he finished 87th in recruiting this year....and has never finished better than 5th in recruiting in the AAC...

Being such a good recruiter, this has baffled some of the usf alum and fans....

Brad Brownell: Only Larry freaking Shyatt has a WORSE overall winning percentage among Clemson basketball coaches since 1975. Let that sink in. It's Larry Shyatt & then Brad Brownell.

I hope USF can be patient

Jeff could always come back to Clemson. Wouldn't that be nice.

Nah, I agree. Baffled, and I hate it for him too. I was thinking he'd contend for better talent in Florida and skyrocket the team.

I’ve always wanted our transfers to go there to help him. Hopefully Ajou, Dukes, and Thornton can all make impacts next year.

It’s a different world than when he was at Clemson, but he’s doing pretty well in the portal.

Re: Jeff Scott is struggling in Recruiting at USF

Feb 4, 2022, 5:22 PM

Dabo encouraged him to take the position. He too was optimistic this was a program Jeff could succeed at. He certainly hasn’t forgotten how to recruit but maybe he needs to rethink the right way to get recruits to join South Florida. Also, the AAC has some tough competition these days.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He is going the portal route. I believe he got 3 or 4 from

Re: Jeff Scott is struggling in Recruiting at USF

Feb 4, 2022, 5:30 PM

Jeff Scott is not struggling at USF.

USF is bringing 14 people from the transfer portal. USF has one of the best transfer classes in the Nation. Most teams can’t even sign 14 people. I think he was left dumpster fire by Charlie Strong and now is trying to build it back up. I’ll go ahead and make a bold prediction. I say Jeff Scott makes a bowl game within a year or two.

Feb 4, 2022, 5:37 PM

Yes his recruiting of highschool is low but like another poster stated he is doing g real good with transfer portal. He knows is limitations to be able to get 4 stars kids so I think he is making best of the situation. This yr if he don't go bowling he will be on the hot seat

3-18 overall is what I just looked up. I love JS and hope he makes it back to Clemson someday but to be grabbing 14 out of the portal means he did not have much when he got there. That’s a lot of band aids. Not sure how many of those will be there longer than 2 years. Hopefully these guys can get him through until he can start signing some top players out of high school. Wish him the best and miss him in Tigertown.

So what if he signed 14 portal players?

Feb 4, 2022, 6:12 PM [ in reply to Re: Jeff Scott is struggling in Recruiting at USF ]

Why do people keep acting like they're the magic sauce for a successful program? It may work at USF, but there are no top-notch P5 programs building their program through players who didn't get it done at the school they're leaving.

And you're blaming Charlie Strong for what exactly? He won more games in his final year than Jeff has won in his first 2 combined. That's not Charlie Strong's fault.

I'd love for Jeff to get it done, I really would. But 3 wins in two years is totally on him.

Tough sell at a place that has ever really been a factor in football. Great part of the country unless you hate traffic.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Jeff Scott is struggling in Recruiting at USF

Feb 4, 2022, 7:24 PM

USF was the #2 team in the country back in 07. They didn’t even become a fbs team until 2001 but have gone to 10 bowls. There have been a few gaps of losing since joining fbs, but most years they have been a very competitive team that challenged for their conference championship. To say they’ve never been a factor in college football is just not true.

Re: Jeff Scott is struggling in Recruiting at USF

Feb 4, 2022, 7:40 PM

I like Jeff Scott, Brent Venables and Tony Elliott. Each of those coaches did an excellent job for Clemson and all are fine people.

That does not change the fact that most head coaches fail to succeed at the Power Five level.
Our experience and support of those 3 guys does not change the fact that the skill set necessary to become a successful head coach is not the same skill set that allows people to succeed as assistant coaches and coordinators.

I wish each of them good luck. I think that it would be highly unusual if more than one of them is successful as a head coach at the jobs they now hold.

Exactly why BV will succeed. He's no dummy. Tough to build from the ground up. They are already successful. BV to OKC is like Kirby to uga.

But Billy Napier is certainly redeeming himself

Feb 4, 2022, 5:57 PM

He was too young to be an OC in a struggling offense here. But he did a great job at UL and is firing up a long-moribund recruiting program.
If you can simply keep Florida recruits home and lure a few stellar out-of-staters -UF is a picturesque spot in many hormonal senses- Gainesville could be a top-5 job.

So much bad info in this whole thread. I was at the USF NSD

Feb 5, 2022, 7:42 AM

event - about 75 of us plus coaches and early enrollees.

Michael Kelly led off - the AD. There is ABSOLUTELY NO warmth on Jeff Scott’s seat AT ALL.

He’s got AT LEAST 3 more full years to get this thing going - and he will.

He is starting his 3rd year - if you count the insanity of the Covid year.

Charlie Strong was a complete program destroyer and we witnessed him first-hand run it under the dirt. He should have been let go at least a year earlier.

Jeff has the Dabo “it”. He will show improvement this year and then start rolling after that.

On the coaching staff - Daquan Bowers, Khalon Davis, Quandon Christian - spent a good bit of time talking with these guys. They know it is coming at USF - they all said it felt like the first 5 years under Dabo.

Also Xavier Dye - I didn’t get to talk with him.

New OC - Trent Trickett from FSU - dynamic guy - gonna be good.

New DC - Bob Shoop - some good credentials - not completely sold here.

CJS got Michael Dukes, Ray Thornton III, Ajou Ajou via portal from us.

The QB is GOOD - rising sophomore - lefthander - Timmy McClain - starter as a true freshman - made mistakes, but is dynamic - looked a lot better than our guy a lot of the time last year.

The culture is changing. Lots of family & faith-based talk from everyone. Only signed 1 on NSD - rest were all early enrollees - a huge help.

New locker room - I have been in it - it is first class. It’s off the outdoor practice. It has a small player’s lounge, but it is very nice.

Ground is way more than broken on a full-field indoor facility. It won’t be Clemson, but it will be close.

Next piece is on-campus stadium and that will start in the next 2 years.

Spent a lot of time talking to Jeff & Sara and Brad (he’s retiring after this year - joking says he is leaving the NIL stuff for Jeff to deal with) - they all love Tampa and realize this is their chance to become Dabo-esque legendary at a place they really like.

Like Dabo said about Clemson years ago - if they gonna get USF, they better get us now.

The community, the admin, the school is extremely confident in where this train is heading.

The event was amazing. So positive and forward-looking. Clemson and how we have done it and the example we are to college football must have come up specifically 50 times.

Made my wife & I extremely proud - from both a Clemson and USF perspective.

If they gonna get USF, dey better get us now.

I loved Jeff while he was here ( I’ve probably met him the most out of any Clemson coaches ) and have wished nothing but the best for him. I was hoping he could really show out down there and use that as a jumping ship to a bigger program.

It just hasn’t clicked though. Hopefully it does this year and they can begin to get some momentum otherwise the pressure will crank up. Maybe some of these transfer’s from our program can make a difference for him.

I don’t want to “speak” it into existence but if he were let go after this year I would love to see him back here (I know we don’t have a open spot, and I’m not saying he should replace Streeter) but I hope something could be worked out. Maybe a offensive analysis until Streeter takes a HC job. I think almost every Tiger fan would be estatic to have a promote from within mentality if it meant Scott.
