Jaleel Skinner

Apr 7, 2022, 11:53 AM

Question for anyone who is actually in the know. Was there any issue or beef with Skinner or his family during recruitment? I was highly interested in him and thought we were in it on him until crickets. I think the kid could be a star based on upside. Just saw a comment on the Big Dave tweeter thread from someone who claims to be his dad, just made me wonder if there was an issue.

I hate to say it but if I was a TE with no affiliation to Clemson it would be the last place I would go. It honestly seems like we forget we have them most games.

Clemson went a couple of seasons with Trevor Lawrence at QB where we didn't have a viable receiving option at TE.

If you remove that time Clemson has always kept the TE very involved in the offense.

Last year Allen led the team in targets on several occasions. For a TE to lead the team in targets shows a definite decision to make sure the TE is involved in the offense.

The guys younger than Allen are even better receiving threats more in line with what we have with Brandon Ford and Jordan Leggett.

Allen had 28 catches last year man, come on. The last good year a TE had here was what, Leggett in 2016?

No inside information but that seemed like an NIL issue. He was all over the map with who he favored at different times in his recruitment. I also recall that early in his recruitment he called Clemson his dream school but the Tigers hadn't offered yet. Once offered i believe some thought it was only a matter of time till he committed. Later on it seemed Clemson backed off a bit.

I thought the cooling from Clemson came when Skinner publicly started talking in interviews about how he didn't care if he played TE or WR in college but he wanted to make it clear that he was a guy who planned to spend a lot more time catching the ball than blocking.

I can remember the first time he was quoted as saying that in an article here in TNET and it raised a lot of eyebrows.

We got a few more updates on him after that, but he "cooled on Clemson" really quick after making that his public mindset.

I remember that, and his words didn’t go over well on TNet. He didn’t want to be used primarily as a blocker for RBs.
A TE with 5 catches is awesome. Of course that means that he would have to be used as a blocker on the other 75+ plays.

Clemson offered Jake Johnson first in the 22 class, but Clemson was never really in the running for him. Skinner and Oscar Delp were offered later in the cycle, and it seemed like the staff recruited Delp more than Skinner. I don’t think Clemson ever made Skinner feel like a priority, which sucks because out of those 3 he was always the most likely to get.
