Jacksonville: Once a Clemson recruiting hot-bed now....

Jun 26, 2012, 10:43 PM

Seems to be somewhere we are locked out of recently. There are still plenty of talented players coming out of the area but I can't seem to think of the last one we grabbed. I'm curious about others opinions on why this is. I feel its directly tied to losing the Gator Bowl (a bowl that we have been to more than any other team) because of John Swofford's ineptitude.

What do you think?

Tavaris Barnes and Xavier Brewer are both from Jacksonville

so we're still pulling players from there. Barnes was a big get in 2010

Yep funny how people grasp at straws.

Um, you realize Harper and Brewer both played high school...

football in 2007. We just finished our 2012 recruiting class. So Barnes (in 2010) is our only player from Jax in 5 years. That's pretty unusual historically. I'm not grasping at straws. Just making a point.

xavier brewer, tavaris barnes all from Jacksonville recently and rashad hall and carlton lewis both from nearby st. augustine, so we've gotten good production from the 904 recently. Though, I see your point; certainly not quite on par with Brian Dawkins, Dexter McCleon, Rod Gardner, Patrick Sapp of mid-90s, early 2000s, which was largely a product of Rick Stockstill, who played at Fernandina Beach, FL and who's brother Jeff was on Clemson's '81 title team, so we had deep coaching connections down there. But the Scott's have maintained a solid footing there, just not as many top-notch athletes coming out of there as down in South FL where we've had success recently (Sammy, for one).

Does the fact that Jacksonville is now the Atlantic Ocean hurt recruiting?

I seem to recall a lot of people saying the same thing about getting recruits out of Georgia. Not saying that now are they? Maybe the recruits there aren't a good fit, or grew up fans of other schools. If there is one thing I don't doubt about this staff, it's recruiting.
