You guys have any unusual Christmas traditions?

Dec 22, 2021, 11:51 AM

We've always spent Christmas Eve with my dad's side of the family and the menu always consisted of a smorgasbord of foods that have absolutely nothing to do with each other. My mom always makes Swedish meatballs, my uncle would make BBQ pulled pork (with Shealy's mustard sauce), my aunt would make smelts, another uncle would make penne vodka, and I started bringing smoky tinga tacos.

As time's gone on and the family has changed, my generation has had to take over some of the cooking. I put a shoulder on the smoker this morning, but I won't be using mustard sauce. I'm also taking over smelt duty (whoever smelt it dealt it) and my wife is making the penne vodka. She also got pierogis from an authentic Polish market so her family gets some representation. Plus pierogis perfectly don't fit with all the other food. spooneye is bringing a squash casserole this year, which is another new addition.

You guys got any unique traditions besides the festivus pole and the airing of grievances?

Trying to half ### dry age a rib roast right now...

Dec 22, 2021, 12:01 PM

but I'm getting anxious that I will end up trimming off all the fat cap to get the thing grill ready after it's dry aged. Also not sure I like the way the fridge is supposed to smell after.

May bail and just get a new roast and do it the way I've always done it on the egg.

Little fish.

Dec 22, 2021, 12:13 PM

I think it started because my dad's cousin's family's Italian and they did a feast of the seven fishes thing. Then my aunt took it over and now I make 'em.

Salmon stew on Christmas Eve

Dec 22, 2021, 1:17 PM

at my Aunt's house. It morphed into Salmon Stew and hotdogs because some people didn't like salmon stew.

I eat that shiiiit up. My wife hates it. I have not had it in years and we are not going this year to her house.

It's poor people stuff, you guys may not understand.

We used to do oyster stew every Christmas Eve but the great uncle who made it died so we now to Cheese coneys (hot dogs with Cincinnati chili and cheese) because my wife is from Cincinnati. I like em both.

Not giving presents

Dec 22, 2021, 1:49 PM

My family ended that about 10-15 years ago, and its the best thing ever. Gradually, we've quit getting together for Christmas, and that's been nice as well.

I'm trying to talk my wife into the no presents thing, but 14 years in its still a hard sell. I've generally gotten out of going to see her family (benefits of having a dog that someone needs to care for).

My ultimate goal in all this is that it ends up like any other paid day off from work, kinda like Labor day in December.

Yeah, with it falling on Saturday, it’s just an extra pain

We largely quit the presents.

We have money and will just buy what we need and the kids generally get what the need during the year. Buying gifts seemed like wasting money on things that the receiver doesn't need.

Previous years we just rented a cabin in the mountains and had a family getaway instead. We'd buy games, puzzles, movies, etc. for the week and wrap them and open them when we got there.

We didn't do that this year because my oldest graduated college and has to work.

Spaghetti and meatballs at the in-laws on Christmas Eve

Dec 22, 2021, 3:01 PM

They do all their gift giving on Christmas Eve, can’t have Santa getting any of the credit. They are all about competing to see who gives everybody the most gifts. Worse part is it’s quantity over quality so tons of dollar store crap. I lose every year because it’s $20 Ingles gift cards from me for everybody. Anybody under 18 that’s around on Christmas morning gets a candy bar and an orange from Santa.

growing up, me and my brother would play golf

Dec 22, 2021, 3:10 PM

on Christmas afternoon no matter what. But this was SC Lowcountry, it was usually shirtsleeve or light jacket weather. But not always - one year (1989?) we played in a foot of snow, the year of the big Christmas blizzard in SC. Used orange golf balls so we could find them. May have been the most fun we ever had on a golf course.
