I've stayed out of the expansion fray generally....

Nov 20, 2012, 9:09 AM

...and I hate this stuff breaking just before our weekend clusterpluck.....

...but if the ACC selects UConn, or any other basketball-first school to fill the void, I'll be most distressed.

The problem is, Rev...

Nov 20, 2012, 9:14 AM

...what football-school firsts are available?

I ask that question genuinely, to see if anyone has a (realistic) answer.

I think you need to think "outside the box" and consider

Nov 20, 2012, 1:01 PM [ in reply to The problem is, Rev... ]

most teams in the Big12 and Big10 as being "available".

Playing ND every third year and Clemson, FSU, VT very often should be a good selling point.

I have also tried to remain calm, but

Nov 20, 2012, 9:16 AM

if we pick a basketball school and not someone favorable for football, things are not going to end good for Clemson.

Swoff and the ACC needs to let FSU, Clemson, and others with real football interest make the decision for what direction to go.

Re: I have also tried to remain calm, but

Nov 20, 2012, 9:18 AM

What would us and FSU choose from?!

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That i really dont know, LOL

Nov 20, 2012, 9:25 AM

I just think FSU and Clemson need to start finding away to drive the conference. Dont know if it is possible, but if we dont start thinking outside the (basketball) box, we might find ourselves screwed.

If the SEC makes a play for FSU and Louisville, then the ACC in football is headed down for sure.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I went from feeling great about the ACC's stability

Nov 20, 2012, 9:20 AM [ in reply to I have also tried to remain calm, but ]

when we got ND halfway in the door... To not feeling good at all. I really think the conference is in trouble if Maryland negotiates down the buyout. FSU will be watching closely.

badge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Maryland's move was a sell out in its purest form...

Nov 20, 2012, 1:02 PM

The league shouldn't move an inch on the buyout, and should take it to court if that's the direction Maryland wants to go. It's critical to prevent any additional defections over the short term, unless those defections are done en masse.

Three spots to get to 16

Nov 20, 2012, 9:26 AM [ in reply to I have also tried to remain calm, but ]

The options are:

1. Notre Dame (full membership needed to make this work)
2. Penn State (BIG fallout from past year is huge and could help us get them)
3. Louisville (more basketball but a good football brand)
4. Cincy (good basketball and ok football but Kelly is gone)
5. UCONN (clearly basketball school with some football success)
6. East Carolina (a football school but the pickens are getting really slim with this one)
7. South Florida (we are going down hill really fast now)
8. Central Florida (slit your wrist time)

So essentially we must get one of the first three. Anything less and we are screwed.

Re: Three spots to get to 16

Nov 20, 2012, 10:09 AM

Good points. If the ACC takes any of the bottom four, then they should just lock the doors. Particularly the bottom three have very little profile recognition more than 150 miles from their stadiums. When I see USF, I think U of San Fran.

If we take a "basketball first" school it really is just

Nov 20, 2012, 9:18 AM

a swap for Maryland. Not a big loss or anything. As mentioned, what football school is available?

People need to realize that teams that are "down" in football right now don't stay there. Ga Tech has more national titles than we do in football. Heck, even SC went on a 21 game losing streak and now has a nine win season this year (and that's all they're getting too).

My point is, teams do not stay put record-wise. We are in a conference that CAN be good at football. It just is down this year, and guess what? We've taken full advantage of it to whip some teams that we've been needing to whip for a while now. Good for us. Finish off the chickens and we will have the ranking and great bowl to go with it just as if we were in any other conference.

UConn is not a better replacement. If that were the case the B1G would have taken them instead of Maryland. Quit fooling your self and take your head out of the sand. They have only been an FBS football team for 12 years for pete sake.

chance of being a decent football school than UCONN. Edsall has a chance of getting them back on track sooner rather than later. They were off to a good start this year before the injuries came.

Basically, Maryland will have an on and off football program, while UCONN will never have a good program.

Exactly. UCONN is just another Duke and we certainly don't need another one of those. Duke does more than it's obligation of making our football standing look pathetic.

They also play in the big east and not ACC. Duke also has a winning record vs the coots.

Those stats mean jack. Just means both UCONN and Duke are slightly better than an FCS team.

The same UCONN that has lost to Western Michigan and Temple....

The same UCONN that has lost to Western Michigan 2 years in a row.

The same UCONN that has lost to Temple 2 of the last 3 seasons.

The same Big East where Pitt lost to Youngstown state, USF lost to Ball St., Cinci lost to Toledo, Rutgers lost to Kent state

Do I need to keep going?

this duke football team?

Nov 20, 2012, 11:54 AM

Judge agrees: Duke football as bad as it gets

A Franklin, Ky., Circuit Court judge sided with a devilishly clever argument and ruled in favor of Duke University yesterday in a breach of contract lawsuit brought forth by the University of Louisville.

Judge Phillip J. Shepherd agreed with Duke’s lawyers — the football team is so bad that any replacement would do.

U of L sued Duke for $450,000 — or a series with another Atlantic Coast Conference opponent — after the Blue Devils backed out of a four-game football contract with three dates remaining.

The contract called for a penalty of $150,000 per game if a date with a “team of similar stature” could not be arranged.

Duke’s lawyers argued the Blue Devils, which have a record of 6-45 over the past five seasons, were so bad that any team would be a suitable replacement.

Judge Shepherd agreed in his summary:

“At oral argument, Duke (with a candor perhaps more attributable to good legal strategy than to institutional modesty) persuasively asserted that this is a threshold that could not be any lower. Duke’s argument on this point cannot be reasonably disputed by Louisville.”

Kentucky courts interpret contract terms “according to their plain and ordinary meaning” barring any ambiguity. According to Shepherd, finding a suitable replacement literally meant any NCAA Division I team would suffice – including those in the Football Championship Subdivision (formerly known as Division I-AA.)

After the teams played their initial game in 2002, a 40-3 U of L victory in Durham, N.C., Duke opted out of the remaining games in 2007, 2008 and 2009.

Thanks in part to Duke’s cancellation, the Cards scrambled to find a 12th game for the upcoming season before signing an agreement with Memphis in February. U of L will play at Memphis on Oct. 10 and the Tigers are scheduled to play at U of L in 2010.

“We’re disappointed with the ruling,” said U of L spokesman Kenny Klein. “We will take our time to review the decision and explore our future options.”

Re: this duke football team?

Nov 20, 2012, 12:43 PM

Yes, that Duke football team.

the fact that we're even having to debate whether UCONN is the equivalent of Duke and the ACC is getting ready to add them to the conference is embarrassing in and of itself.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

you're defending your statement; it was a silly one.

Nov 20, 2012, 12:50 PM

Good news and bad news

Nov 20, 2012, 9:48 AM

The bad news is, there aren't any football-first schools out there, that are worth bringing in, that are shopping around. WVU is locked in to the Big 12 now, and I seriously doubt Penn State is looking around after just agreeing to expand the league to 14.

The good news is, even if we do fill the hole with UConn, Louisville, or another basketball-first, mediocre-football school, there is zero net loss. Because that's exactly what Maryland has been since Boomer Esiason graduated--basketball first, mediocre football.

If the ACC even exists past 2015.

The ship has taken on water and Maryland is the first one to grab a life boat.

Others will follow

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Truly sad discussion 'cause if FSU bolts we'll be forced to

Nov 20, 2012, 9:59 AM

decide if we want to stay relevant in football (by following suit) or not (staying in the sinking ship that is the ACC).

SEC would be the best home for us on many levels, assuming we're invited.
