Boston Marathon is today..

Apr 18, 2022, 11:52 AM

I believe..

and my big time long-distance running Son (having run for 25+ years and won his share in age group; now 52)..said he is too slow to qualify..but probably could IF he trained for year.

Have any of you run at Boston..and not from a Girl Friend or committing a robbery?

Thought anyone could run there.

I didn't know the answer either, but Google provided. It

said that there are established maximum times for the different age groups that you must have bettered in a race, to be allowed to compete. Now, I didn't take time to look and see what races were "sanctioned" for that, I would think there would have to be a list.

I gave it a go a few years back. At 54, I missed my qualifying time by one minute 13 seconds. It was one of the hardest things I've ever done. Funny thing is I had to stop during the race as I was cramping bad. When I checked my watch stats following the race I learned that I had stopped for 1-minute 13 seconds. Began to train for another qualifier and developed a bad case of Plantar Fasciitis which took over two years to heal. Although I don't know your son, I feel he could do it if he trained.

I've run 8 Bostons

You have time requirements that are based on age and sex. IT took me a LONG time before able to finally qualify. I just qualified for my 10th, which should hopefully next April. It's the best marathon in the world. It really is. The fan support, organization, etc are 2nd to none.

Yes. You have to run a qualifying time in a certified race

Apr 18, 2022, 7:47 PM

within the past 1.5 years or something like that. Qualifying times based on age group and sex. You then have to apply to run Boston. No guarantee you get in. The race has a registration cap. I think a qualifying time is good for next 2 years at Boston if it's run after the end of September.

I qualified many moons ago at Kiawah. Good time for a marathon - early December I think it was. Made my time by 1 minute. I ran Boston when it started at noon. Was in the 90's that year. Something like 800 people ended up in the hospital. Saw some crazy leg positions from cramps that folks had and were down on the side of the road. 50's the day before, 50's the day after. Crazy front and terrible for race day.

Great race to run. Fans along both sides of the road the entire route. You start slightly staggered in various similarly-qualified groups. You pass people and get passed the entire race by folks that are less/better trained than you. Awesome experience that any runner should try at least once. Considering trying to do it again as an old fart. That qualifying time keeps getting larger and larger!
