Brian Kelly - what a jerk

Nov 30, 2021, 9:11 AM

Didn't address his team in person - sent a text message.

Told the press just a couple/few weeks ago that he wouldn't be leaving Notre Dame - then did.

He doesn't give a rip about LSU. He just wants a natty and figures his best chance is there rather than at Notre Dame.

Notre Dame fans, students and boosters (especially) have a right to be royally ticked off at him for all this. Talking about burning a bridge - he blew that one up.

There is no loyalty anymore, for most coaches. It's all about their own resume, not loyalty to their program. That's one thing I love about Dabo is the loyalty to the program. He didn't graduate from Clemson, but this is HIS school, and HIS program. If he's ever to leave, you can be damm sure that he won't just cut out and send the team a group text. He'd do it with class and with respect to the players and to the program.

Does it really matter about burning bridges

In college football coaching ?

How many coaches have returned to a school where they had previously coached?

Mack Brown ... I got nothing else

Somebody returned to USC or one

there are three that I know of off the top of my head, I'm sure probably more

Randy Edsall (Uconn)

Greg Schiano (Rutgers)

Mack Brown (UNC)

I'm not defending him (at all)

Nov 30, 2021, 9:20 AM

But he sent out a text because the news broke. He (evidently) had a team meeting this morning with the players. The move is what it is and he can (and should) be judged based on it, but in our current 24 hour ESPN/Social media news/rumor cycle, I'm not sure how you can call a team meeting before the news starts to leak.

Not taking up for him on his choice (especially leaving a team still in CFP contention), but I think your first point is perhaps a bit harsh.

So if it was just a rumor at the time…

Nov 30, 2021, 9:30 AM [ in reply to I'm not defending him (at all) ]

I think the plan was to keep it under wraps until the team meeting.

My other aspect of this is that after he had accepted the job and knew for sure he was going to be announced today as LSU head coach is he was sitting in the living room of a high school kid recruiting him to go to ND when the news broke.

Does that show he is dedicated to ND and working to help them to the very end, or does that show he is a lying hypocrite of the highest order?

This is the guy who had an unpaid student filming from a tower in 50 mph winds which directly led to his death. Kelly washed his hands of it and claimed no culpability

Re: Brian Kelly - what a jerk

Nov 30, 2021, 9:24 AM

That's yet another reason I respect Dabo so much. In the past when he's been asked about the potential of the Alabama job coming up in the future his answers have been more like you never know what might happen. I don't take that as Dabo wanting to keep his options open or anything like that, but it comes across as a lot more honest than the typical coaching answer of saying you'll never leave while having Uhaul on the other line.

definitely not 1 of my top Kellys

Notre Dame fans have no right to be ticked off. They stole

Nov 30, 2021, 9:31 AM

him from Cincinnati before a bowl game after he elevated that team to #3 in the nation.

I have no sympathy for Notre Dame fans and administration. This move may cool some of their arrogance. Maybe they can steal Cincinnati's coach again.

The domers would have to get a 2 year death penalty to cool their degree of arrogance. I have had to deal with some in my career and in my extended family.

Re: Brian Kelly - what a jerk

Nov 30, 2021, 10:25 AM

I'm never been sure how a coach is supposed to answer a question about whether he would leave.

I know some coaches tell the AD about their "dream jobs" where they would leave if offered it, but in general coaches are employees, not fans, and they have every right to leave for a better opportunity.

No coach is going to say, "I'd leave tomorrow if a better opportunity came up," because of fan discontent and recruiting, so asking the question is kind of stupid.

The lower level div 1 programs have it easier because they expect their coaches to be poached and are sometimes proud of it.

What ND has to ask itself is why Kelly would leave for LSU which does not appear to be a good fit for him.

I'm not a Kelly fan but it will be interesting to see how he does there and how much patience the administration and fans have if there are struggles and Kelly is his usual personable self.

BTW from what I understand, Kelly said something like "I can't see myself leaving ND" which is NOT the same as saying he wouldn't leave.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I've always hated the media obsession with coaching moves

Nov 30, 2021, 11:07 AM

the constant questions, are you going to leave? huh? huh? are you?

ANd the need for getting the scoop when in reality nobody gives a #### who got the scoop and waiting a day to get it officially released makes no difference to anyone, even the most die hard fans.

Never been a fan of Orgeron, but can't imagine the LSU fanbase going from someone who speaks Cookie Monster like they do to someone who speaks properly and has a slight girly tone. :)

Nov 30, 2021, 11:11 AM

Loyalty ???
Coaches can get fired after two years in the job.
There is no Loyalty on either side of the fence.
I understand why fans would be upset, but loyalty has nothing to do with the sport of college football or professional sports for that matter. It is, always has been, and always will be about what’s best for me. And quite honest there’s nothing wrong with that.

Re: Brian Kelly - what a jerk

Nov 30, 2021, 11:42 AM

Funny thing is now Brian Kelly has to pretty much beat Alabama just to get into the playoffs. Something he's not been able to do.

In this case I'm going to assume the issue is primarily the $$$. Aren't they throwing Mel Tucker level cash to get him Baton Rouge?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Brian Kelly - what a jerk

Nov 30, 2021, 12:35 PM

I’m not a Brian Kelly fan, but there is no loyalty in college football except fans to their program. It’s a vicious cycle. Even if Brian Kelly was “loyal” to ND, let him go 5-7 one season and see how “loyal” the ND fans and admin will be to him.

We have two national championships in the last 5 years, and the majority of this board wants Tony Elliott fired. I’m not arguing the merits of that, I’m just stating the facts. There is no loyalty in college football. There’s only wins, losses, championships, and salaries.

As a proponent of capitalism who also holds traditional values, I’m conflicted by all of it.
