Is it like a peloton class except you're just sitting there barking out orders to count out jumping jacks?

e-mail from our teacher that the Schoolology App, the latest and greatest online learning tool that our county switched to over the summer for this upcoming year, isn't loading correctly and they're having issues on the developer's side. Not a huge deal today, but will be a big problem if some of the areas of the app are inaccessible down the road (like end of the week).

Not even day 1 and this software is ######## the bed.

so one kid who was in person (these are 4th graders) sees her mom connect via Zoom (which she is not supposed to do of course) and starts crying. Teacher has to remind parents NOT TO CONNECT to classes when their students are in class. This situation is addictive for 'helicopter' parents.

Sep 8, 2020, 11:27 AM

Trying to avoid walking around the background.

The district issued tablets can’t access the zoom links, so we are using MacBook for it. The muting and unmuting isn’t going well

One mom had some boob showing on the side of the screen, was about to go ninja for y’all and then she had to move around and adjust the screen and then cut herself out of the shot

Greenville is using Google Meet / Classroom

and the teachers could not permanently mute students - meaning students could be muted, but they could unmute themselves. I think they are trying to fix that (or may already have). They also issued Chromebooks to connect - many having issues (I told the teacher to have the students reboot those devices and she said it seemed to help. Students are used to IOS where you never turn the machine off, Chrome uses some version of Windows I think.)

chromebooks use ChromeOS, linux based

Sep 8, 2020, 3:53 PM

SheGUAR is actually on the way back from the school with LilGUAR#2's 4th chromebook, the 1st one being the best of the first (3)...shift button was stuck, and it wouldn't 'remember' internet connection settings....and it's like they didn't even check/test/look at the replacements...busted screen but connected fine, gouged screen and wouldn't maintain connection....

We did this end of last year without these issues...and LilGUAR#1's chromebook isn't having connection issues....

either way, both kids are using their own chromebooks instead, either way

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Not being a Linux user

Sep 8, 2020, 6:25 PM

does it handle "sleep" ok? I usually just close and reopen my Mac all the time, never reboot and never have any issues, but my Windows (work) notebooks would get real slow and finally just almost stop working if I did not reboot - so I always turned them off and back on when using.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgringofhonor-fatherg-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

yeah? The one my daughter is currently using isn't

Sep 8, 2020, 6:58 PM

technically hers...wife got it for business stuffs that is mostly google docs, but then was given a couple Microsoft Surface laptops from old job, so the chromebook was going mostly unused until daughter wanted to switch to it for school last week

I used it for a few weeks, and don't recall any issues w/ sleep or booting up...if i didn't need CAD and Revit et al, I'd switch to a chromebook without a second thought

Today my wife is in classroom giving MAP testing

Sep 8, 2020, 10:58 AM

to her special needs elementary class in person. My son is in his POD class at a neighbors house taking his MAP testing and my daughter and older son are holed up in their rooms doing MAP testing. On the one hand, I get that we need to know how far we've set back these kids learning, on the other they have only been back in school a week. Maybe now isn't the best time for standardized testing.

The American education system needs an overhaul.

Sep 8, 2020, 10:58 AM

The answer is sweatshops. Rather than having kids learn to Tik Tok, we should have them sewing American-made athletic shoes, fashionable clothing, and other useful goods. Once they're older and stronger, they should learn in factories, mills, and mines.

Question...

Sep 8, 2020, 11:25 AM [ in reply to The American education system needs an overhaul. ]

Do they beat them and yell at them in the sweat shops? Or do they just gently nudge them to do more physical labor every day? Cause as long as no one yells or pressures him, I got one that just might thrive in that type of education system.
