This might be the best basketball team we've ever had.

Dec 30, 2020, 11:14 AM

It's obviously early, and we have a lot of conference games to play, but thus far this team is showing a completeness we might not have seen on a Clemson basketball team.

Consider:

-Unparalleled depth
-Aggressive defense
-Many shooters and scorers
-Nice balance of veteran leadership and youth
-And of course, Clemson grit

Based on what I've seen so far, this team is capable of a deep NCAA Tournament run we've only seen a few times here. Obviously, a lot of things have to go right to have that kind of a run, but this team is capable of it.

Here's to staying healthy, staying hungry, and continuing to develop our rotation.

ENJOY THIS SEASON AND THIS TEAM!

Darn you Tate George!!

um, what did Tate do

Jan 3, 2021, 8:19 PM

Darn the Clemson defense and the player that shrunk back completely - ghosted, probably a better term - when he took the shot. Wasn't challenged on the shot at all. It was a freebie. Maybe worst defense ever in a pivotal moment.

The defensive call by Ellis to not press the inbound

pass right at the endline set it all in motion. Don't forget, there was no replay review of the shot, and the shot did not leave his hand before 00.0. There was no way a player could take a full court pass, jump to catch it and have to make a 180 degree turn to get off a clean shot in under 1 second, which eventually lead to the whole tenths of a second... the shot should not have counted, but the defense was played the way it was instructed, go for the ball on the pass but commit no foul... And I have always contended that Elden should have pressed the inbound pass at the line instead of giving Scott Burrell room to heave it...

Jan 3, 2021, 12:39 PM [ in reply to 89/90, 96/97 initially come to mind ]

Those were the 2 teams that came to my mind as well. I think the 90 team had better individual players but I think the 97 team played better together.

I still have not accepted the UConn loss. Only 0.6 seconds went off the clock to gather the missed FT and George jumped, caught the ball, turned and shot in 1.0. That clock operator had the reflexes of an octogenarian.

That being said I am not going to say Judge is wrong yet. This is the first team that I have been excited about in quite a while. I think Simms is the best player that we have had in a while. We have a good combination of guards and big men, as well as veterans and youth who will not play their best until the end of the season.

Judge, I think that you are jumping the gun a little but I've taken worse bets.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Jumping the gun would’ve been if I declared that this team is, without a doubt, our best ever.

Jan 3, 2021, 12:48 PM

I simply said that it might be our best ever, and I clarified it by also stating that it’s still early in the season.

I’m not sure why some people here (not you) take such statements so personally and can’t seem to wait to mention other great Clemson teams. Of course we’ve had some other good teams, and this current team will need to accomplish a lot to be in that discussion. We have a long way to go, but I think it’s very possible.

Campbell, Davis, Forrest, Cash, Howling

Dec 30, 2020, 11:26 AM [ in reply to Which team(s) do you feel were better?*** ]

Two long-time NBA greats on that team, deep run in the tournament (fluky last-second play by an outstanding UCONN team kept us out of the elite 8), competitive at the top of the ACC when the overall talent in the ACC was MUCH MUCH better than it is now.

THAT'S the best Clemson team. This year's team may be Brownell's best. Excellent start this season.
Let's see how they finish.

Just wondering... how old are you? Do you have any recollection of guys like Horace Grant and Larry Nance playing at Clemson?

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That was a great team in 1989-1990.

Dec 30, 2020, 11:37 AM

Unfortunately, that season's NCAA Tournament wins were vacated due to NCAA sanctions. So it's debatable as to whether or not that team should be part of this discussion.

We certainly can't leave out the 1997 Sweet Sixteen team, which also narrowly missed out on a chance to go to the Elite Eight.

And of course, the 1980 Elite Eight team was our best in terms of how far they advanced. Nance was part of that team.

I think you're confusing star players with excellent teams. Horace was a great player - arguably the best in a Clemson uniform - but that 1987 team was a huge disappointment, losing in the first round to #13 Southwest Missouri State.

You seem to be of the belief that no current team can possibly be as good as some of the teams from the 1980s, based on your perception of the ACC then versus now. If so, it doesn't sound like you'll ever be able to objectively view teams from this era.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

That is incorrect. A current team could CERTAINLY be as good or better than any team we've put on the court in the history of Clemson basketball. And if you can recruit players like Horace Grant, Dale Davis, Larry Nance and Elden Campbell, and if you can surround those NBA-caliber players with a supporting cast capable of playing at the level of teams we saw under Bill Foster, Cliff Ellis and Rick Barnes, I will be the first to sing your praises.

Overall, ACC basketball today is a dim shadow of what it once was under those previous coaches. If you are EVER going to raise up a Clemson basketball team to ascendency in this league, NOW is the time. Let's see if you can get it done.

Like I said, so far so good for this year's team. Let's see how they finish.

You do remember that Grayson Marshall badly sprained his ankle right before the ACC tournament. This moved Michael Tait from his natural position of shooting guard to point, hurting us in two ways. Had Grayson stayed healthy that team would have went deeper in the NCAA’s

Until someone duplicates that feat, the 79-80 team has to be considered the best. But this team is impressive and has potential. I would have loved to have had a healthy, aggressive Hunter Tyson all year. He was showing great improvement.

Jan 1, 2021, 8:06 AM [ in reply to Which team(s) do you feel were better?*** ]

We had teams under Bill Foster and Cliff Ellis that may have been more talented and certainly achieved more than our current team has achieved. Rick Barnes had a couple of excellent teams that the current one has not yet matched. I don't think it is appropriate to try to judge a team before January arrives.

Foster's 1979 (?) team went 23-7 and lost in a regional final. Ellis had teams that went 25-6 and 26-9 against very stiff competition. The 26-9 team won the ACC regular season and sent Horace Grant onto a long and successful pro career.

I'd love it if the current team was as successful as those teams.

Not going to speculate as to the best ever, but I did notice something very telling last night.

Our depth and suffocating defense absolutely wore FSU completely out. The last 10 minutes of the game you would see FSU settle for lazy shots, throw much less crisp passes, give up hustle baskets to Clemson, and most of all get out rebounded. FSU was gassed halfway through the second half.

Yes, Brownell is only successful because of Dabo.

Dabo's success in football causes basketball players to want to come to Clemson, because they don't actually care about basketball, but about football and being in the presence of superstar football players and coaches. Plus, Dabo also taught Brad how to recruit and coach. Thankfully, Brad has been taking notes and can now draw up plays and talk to players like a normal human being.

From an entire team standpoint, I agree. What I am excited about is normally BB coached teams are better as the year goes along. You can see the young players are really getting better, Prosper is really starting to show he can really play, and Hall will continue to grow as well. If Trapp can consistently play like he did last night, this team will not only finish in the upper half of the league, they'll be a top 10-15 team in the country. As mentioned in the thread, the 89-90, 96-97 teams were good, but those teams did not have the functional depth that this team has. Cautiously Optimistic!!

Dec 31, 2020, 8:30 PM

My take on the strengths you have described:

Unparalleled depth: Agree; thanks to Coach BB for developing the talent. Most of them are equally talented but no sure fire NBA players. I believe Simms has an outside chance.

Aggressive defense; Strongly agree; strong defense has been a trademark of ALL Coach BB teams but this team is special because of so many talented guards. Depth allows us to keep the minutes between 20-25 for each player and they can wear the other team out by their full court press for 40 minutes.

Many shooters and scorers: Neutral; yes there are many shooters but scorers? Dawes and Sims are the only players who have a chance to get 20 points in a game.

Nice balance of veteran leadership and youth: Strongly agree

And of course, Clemson grit: Agree; I would like to say that all teams who have played for Coach BB, good or bad, had Clemson grit.

What is truly interesting about the potential of this team is Simms. If Brownell can finally get him to play smarter and better discipline he would produce for the starting lineup every game. Right now the bench production is making the difference, but get more minutes with Simms not playing with foul trouble and this team could be scary good.

would have won that one. So glad BB told him to play like he does in practice. Now, in every game, him playing like that, the big men rebounding, Amir playing point power forward, and playing great defense really makes us look really good.. Also, Trapp and Al Dawes, clutch, make us have a great 3 man guards. Chase Hunter looked greatly improved. Newman is a Tiger off the bench and Baehre is making some good plays with his long arms.. Hall looks like he is going to be really good as the season goes on. Hemenway has that 3 pt. shot down, when the other players are not hitting. And let's not forget O Prosper, he has a lot of promise and is a hustler too. Yes, I think we can make it to the sweet 16 especially if Tyson comes back. as strong as he was playing. Definitely the most fun team to watch in years. I like the way Brownell is telling them to "ATTACK, KEEP ATTACKING" TIGERS.

Emphasis on the word “might” ... too early to tell.

Jan 1, 2021, 1:51 AM

The team has a lot of potential, but it has some strong competition for “best ever” ...

Check back in March.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Of course it’s early and we will have to wait and see.

Jan 1, 2021, 7:31 AM

I’m not sure why that precludes a discussion about the many positives we’ve seen this year and the potential that exists.

I think our sweet 16 team with Mitchell, Reed, DeVoe, and Thomas would have been the best I have seen if Grantham didnt get hurt. The teams with Booker and Rivers were pretty dang talented as well. This team certainly has a chance to be great tho. Not sure our guards are as good as Mitchell and Reed but we have great depth. Our front court also has great depth. I would deff say this is our deepest team. We have good talent all around and Simms is dang good but we dont have a star like Blossengame, Booker, or McDaniels imo.

Not sure where Skip is today, but the one Tiger team he played on lost in the first round of the NIT.

If that team could have stayed intact a couple of more years it might have been our best ever.

Well never know.

What would Simms have to do to be considered a collegiate star to you? The dude was preseason first team all conference, and he's WAY more efficient than Blossomgame was during his senior season, in nearly every statistical measure.

Minutes Per Game
Simms = 25.1
Blossomgame = 34.3

Shooting Percentage
Simms = 61%
Blossomgame = 50%

3-Pt Shooting Percentage
Simms = 50%
Blossomgame = 26%

FT Shooting Percentage
Simms = 83%
Blossomgame = 71%

Points Per 40 Minutes
Simms = 20.9
Blossomgame = 20.6

Rebounds Per 40 Minutes
Simms = 9.1
Blossomgame = 7.3

Assists Per 40 Minutes
Simms = 3.5
Blossomgame = 1.7

Steals Per 40 Minutes
Simms = 1.8
Blossomgame = 0.9

Blocks Per 40 Minutes
Simms = 1.3
Blossomgame = 1.0

It bothers me to see various posters not recognizing Simms as a star. He is. And he's apparently very underappreciated, especially considering the leadership qualities he adds, for which he is complemented heavily by coaches.

Jan 31, 2021, 9:43 PM

I’m quite disappointed with our 1-4 record recently. I’ve never posted otherwise over the last few weeks.

I haven’t see anyone here who is happy about the recent results. We all want to see our program succeed. Some of us are willing to see what happens the rest of the year. I’m not sure why you aren’t, other than the fact that you are happier complaining and criticizing than you are supporting the team.

Talent wise individual you may have argument..

Jan 31, 2021, 10:08 PM

Not sure that is true either, but we are not good team and we have zero excitement within our troop. I made this argument probably 6yrs ago that while CBB is a great guy, knows basketball, I could see us drinking a beer together, but he seems to lack the motivation factor that just leaks out of Dabo.

But team wise, we are terrible. But Elden and Dale teams were best I have seen at Clemson personally. We camped for Basketball tix back in those days.

But the teams with Booker, Ogelsby, Jerai Grant, KJ Mc, KC Rivers, Stitt, and Hammonds, those guys may have lacked the exact individual talent or let's say stars because that comes from other ppl opinions!!! But as far as teams, the guys above were a better team. They motivated eachother way better where there seems to be zero motivation except Simmons needs to be excluded. He is the only one with emotion, shaking fist, yelling and motivating his team. The other guys just seem to migrate through the motions.

Our team play sucks. I can't help but to point at the leader. If we got a good quality coach for 2021-22, and were able to keep players out of portal, I think we would give a new guy a great starting point. Unfortunately Simmons will be gone but it's time to make us better. No one thought we could be top 5 team nationally in football for a decade, no reason we can't be top 25 team nationally in Basketball. I love what Butler is doing, why can't we build our men's and give Butler more support as she seems to be great.

They are 10-5 overall, .500 in the ACC (4-4), and have a nice win over Virginia Tech. They are 9-1 at home.

They are a good team this year. A likely NCAA Tournament team IMO. Getting them in Littlejohn will be nice, but it will still be a tough game.
