Obesity, what the actual fack ?

Mar 21, 2022, 9:45 AM

I have coached for over 14 years, in my time, I had one player who I thought was overweight, turns out, she was pregnant.

Any who, watching my daughter play her JV sport (she's too young to play varsity) and over half the girls on the team are obese. Not fat, not chubby, not fluffy.....obese. This is a sport in which you have to constantly run. I heard one girl say she is wearing a 2XL uniform. Kid is at most 16 years old. It's almost depressing.

I'm convinced the biggest privilege that you can have in America is a good set of parents who teach you how to take care of yourself.

We have a girl on my son's t-ball team who is so overweight

Mar 21, 2022, 9:48 AM

she can barely open her eyes.

Her cheeks are so fat it pushes her eye lids together.

I believe that if a child gets over a certain BMI, CPS should be called.

Really? She’s on a TBall team, so it looks like the parents

Are trying to get her out exercising and all you guys can do is fat shame. This is the problem right here. Yes, people get fat, but when they make an effort to fix it, people shame them. Fat people at gyms get shamed. Fat people playing sports get shamed. It’s this shaming that’s going to keep the fat people in their houses and slowly die of high blood pressure because they’re too ashamed to seek medical attention and can’t go out to try and improve themselves.

It's rampant. Sad situation.

Mar 21, 2022, 9:52 AM

When I see grammar-high-college age kids that weigh literally TWICE what they should weigh at that age, my mind can't help but think "What are these poor people gonna look like at age 35 - IF they live to see that age?". If your metabolism is already destroyed at age 20, you have virtually no chance to see old age.

It's a national tragedy.

other thing is -

Mar 21, 2022, 10:21 AM

I regularly tote 50-75 lb. bags of feed on my shoulder down to my chicken house and to my horse barn . I notice when walking with that extra weight just how much more the "load" is on my knees and other joints, sorta simulating how it would be if I weighed 50 pounds more.

It's torture on knees and hips walking up steps or hills carrying that much more weight. I don't know how people tipping 275-300+ can bear it.

Seems that alone would be motivation to shed the excess weight. I cannot get in the mind of someone with such obvious motivation (literally your health - what's more important than that?), yet chooses to remain unmotivated.

So...at least they're playing a sport?

Mar 21, 2022, 9:54 AM

Can you share what the sport is? Commie kickball? That's a lotta running, and anybody who takes it even semi-seriously should shed some pounds just by virtue of participation.

and a nice Mtn. Dew. Then spend the rest of your time on the iPad.

Being active helps, but it doesn't make up for the other terrible choices in your diet.

Granted, I don't know every situation, but it's such a big obstacle for a child to have to overcome. Definitely generational.

It’s super hard for a lot of people

Mar 21, 2022, 12:36 PM

to find access to sidewalks, healthy food or a gym. In most rural and black communities, there is a lack of sidewalks to walk or jog. There is lack of proper nutrition due to the inability to walk to a grocery store. Most grocery stores in poor neighborhoods or communities cater to their insatiable appetite for sugar, fat and carbs. Even a Kroger or Food Lion in a poor area will cut down their vegetable and fruit offerings for more freezer space.

This is a HUGE issue that is very complex, but unfortunately one that everyone ignores.

In Raleigh, I worked on a program to open up a farmers market 3x a week in a Southeast Raleigh neighborhood. Almost no one came and it was a bust. Then we started offering free yoga and free exercise classes 3x a week. It was hot for a while, but then fizzled out.

It’s very very hard to stay in shape, be strong and make good decisions. It’s really really hard and I guarantee you that 75% of posters on here are fat. Not being mean, it’s just reality because it is so hard. People don’t want to do hard #### man. That is why I, at 42, was the oldest by 17 years at my last test (that I failed) and everyone was like “what are you doing here at your age”. It’s hard and it’s why I am taking today off.
