Similar offseason like one before 2018

Was thinking that this year has some similarities to the offseason before 2018. We have an exciting freshmen qb coming after a disappointing year at QB. We have a potential best D-Line with seniors opting to come back in KJ Henry and Xavier Thomas. XT is tbd, but reports are optimistic.
The receiver group is certainly much different and likely will rely on our younger guys to step up. I am personally no longer setting my expectations for a good Ngata year. Our RB one two punch with Shipley and Pace is certainly different and a big cause for optimism.
I actually think our LB’s will be an upgrade with carter growing in role and Simpson ready for a breakout year.
Oline, big question mark, but believe we can only go up.
Who is ready for Clemson football already?

You are very correct in your assessment of the future team. My biggest concern is the leadership on the field. Clemson was a much, much better team with Skalski on the field. Similar to Boulware a few years ago. You win with guys who refuse to lose. Do the Tigers have that guy in the lineup? It’s great when it is the QB but I don’t think el cinco is the answer. I’m not sure you can coach that quality. Do the Tigers have that guy?

And BB is a natural leader as well. I think the defense will be fine as long as we can continue to get good pressure on the qb and don’t leave our young dbs out to dry.
On offense most of our problems are with the scheme. It’s obvious Jeff Scott was a mastermind offensively and we don’t have another one on staff currently. We lack difference makers at WR, and need help badly at IOL. If our coaches can get our backs open in space and use the slot and TE more, we should be average on O and therefore a dangerous team.

can see a guy like Henry being one as well. Guys grow in to those roles. Assume them when the mantle is passed. Davis, Simpson, Bentley, Ruke. I believe we'll be fine there

The single difference for next year getting into playoffs

will be the play at QB. All other things are a distant 2nd.
Good news is that we have 2 legit options next year. No offense to TP...but it was not a real option.
I hope DJ gets healthy physically and with football IQ and improves.... and that Cade is what is as advertised. No reason to believe both things at this point.
If so, I believe we are going to be very good.

DJ's play. I hope I am wrong but I think it's a sheer lack of ability. It happens.
If DJ has a monster year, I will take my crow - and gladly because I truly hope he succeeds. I just can't help feeling like he isn't near a talented as we thought he would be from what I saw this year.

How does a guy with “sheer lack of ability” pass for

700 yards in his first two games as a starter?
Can you explain that? Because it happened.

Jake Bentley threw for over 500 yards against a national champion BV defense. And he’s terrible.
Anyone can have decent stats for 2 games, especially when your first read is open and you have time. Those 2 games have proven to be the exception not the rule.

A lack of diet, physical preparation, practice with WR's, and playbook & film study. A feeling of having already arrived instead of a feeling of being at the start of a race or base of the mountain.
Add in a focus on Dr Pepper and Popeyes and injuries which are subject to result from extra weight.
A good kid who mailed it in with motivation and preparation. And no other 2021 options at QB.

Given his past accomplishments...until this year...I don't think there's any lack of ability with DJ. I can't explain the transformation from his first year to this past year. The offensive line, receivers, play calling, injuries all contributed and there definitely appeared to be a lack of confidence. I expect him to show a significant improvement in 2022 because his football career suggests 2021 was an aberration...

Having a guy named ETN in the lineup helped DJ a bunch! Not having a guy named ETN in the lineup was a disaster for DJ and would have been for most other QBs. Travis meant as much to this offense as Trevor.

If that’s the case DJ will be fine with Shipley, Pace and Mafah next year.
The defense is loaded with leaders. KJ, Bresee, Simpson, and others who will grow into the role. Shipley currently looks like the best bet for a leader on offense but someone else like Beaux or a reinvigorated DJ could emerge.

OK. You lost me a little bit with that post FT. TL16 would have been the 1st pick in the draft with or without ETN, though we are all glad it was with ETN.
Both TL16 and ETN were handicapped in 2020 due to lack of OL performance particularly run blocking.
TL16 and ETN overcame that handicap enough to win all regular games TL16 played by an average margin of 31 points per game. This same Clemson team with DJ beat a 6-6 Boston College team by 6 and lost to a good 10-0 Notre Dame team on the road (who TL16 beat in a sleepwalk by 24 points six weeks later.)

DJU will be on a short leash next year if he is even in the conversation after 5/1
