I dont get the Oklahoma, Texas move to SEC

Nov 29, 2021, 9:05 AM

What does this really accomplish for those schools? Likely money was driving effort, but they may never compete for a title in the SEC. And if they do, its doubtful it would be sustainable, more like the LSU one off.

Not only that, it’s defensive. Texas and OU don’t want those spots

going to, say, Oklahoma State and Baylor…leaving them to rule an even more finished Big 12.

That and in no way is Texas not going to go out of their way to completely rub any advantage that TAM might think it has.

Texas and OU were already two of the riches programs, this just elevates it more. OU was Bama level money, texas more. Think of it this way, it wasn't those programs running to the SEC, but rather the SEC buying two of the most valuable programs from a league that was collapsing... mostly because of those two programs. Really, the SEC is reforming the *best* from the old Southwest Conference Texas/AM/Arky + the SWC/B8 - OU/Mizzou. Add in LSU and The SSIPPIs - and yup money

biggest perk is ESPN will be marketing your team 24/7

and Disney's marketing budget is huge. You just gotta sit back and collect the checks.

But those checks just go into Texas's coach buyouts.... I mean, a six game losing streak in conference does not sounds as bad in the SEC as does the B12.... but Kansas is just Vandy west so....

Disney will start boosting Ok and Tex the day they ink the deal.

Just like they artificially prop up ar, Miss, mis st, Kent, tenn..aub..etc.

shot at a National Championship in their current conference. Unless the playoffs are expanded, the SEC is going to have chronic firing of head coaches (worse than it already is). Even if playoffs don't expand, both Texas and OU are going to playoffs if they are undefeated in BIG 12.

Re: I dont get the Oklahoma, Texas move to SEC

Nov 29, 2021, 9:11 AM

Well unless a realignment happens it's likely Texas will go to SEC west and OU to the east. Saying that the west needed a cupcake since they are in tge east division and the east needed someone to compete with jawjaw and give them a boost in schedule strength. Or it could of just been greed and the move was all about money.

Re: I dont get the Oklahoma, Texas move to SEC

Nov 29, 2021, 9:16 AM

If you think back, this wasn't announced until there seemed to be a consensus to change the playoffs to a 12 team invitational.

Since this announcement, every conference (less the sec) has united with keeping the playoffs at 4, with maybe going to 6 or 8 with the possibility of limiting the number of teams per conference.

12 team playoff with more cash in the pockets sounds like a great move to for TX and OK...maybe not so much if the playoff expansion is toned down

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

they should have waited until the playoff expansion actually

Nov 29, 2021, 9:17 AM

happened. Its not like the SEC would ever refuse them. Either way, they still have better shot at playoffs in their current conference.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It was a total money grab. It was a total win for the SEC,

Nov 29, 2021, 9:17 AM

and will be a total loss for those two Big 12 refugees. It makes as much sense as West Virginia being in the Big 12, which is NONE.

Pure money grab, with a much harder path to championships

Nov 29, 2021, 9:20 AM

Lincoln Riley saw that, you and I both saw that, how long until coaches at other mid-tier SEC programs see that? Say Mark Stoops lands at Oklahoma and Kiffin goes to LSU, who in the world is going to want the Kentucky and Ole Miss jobs? Beamer and Drinkwitz? They could get more money and improve their competitive position, but anybody else would just be a mercenary, sacrificing the opportunity to win for a fat paycheck.

That is not what Riley wanted. I highly doubt that is what Venables wants. Why would Luke Fickell want that? He knows they are going to a P5, will be among the better teams in the conference, and Cincy will have to pay him.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

And, the power SEC schools can pay coordinators & assitant

Nov 29, 2021, 9:22 AM

coaches more than some head coaching jobs. Is USC really better off in SEC than ACC. All the talk about money for years on end has resulted in exactly what?

I can see Ryan Day going to the NFL, possibly Chicago if they make a change this year. If that happens, Fickell to Ohio State.

More than likely it was money, but if Alabama and Auburn move to the East one of these two schools could eventually compete for the West division.

Alabama and Auburn in the east = death of USC***

I think that is the most likely to happen. Less disruption to the old school SEC rivalries.

The OG SEC schools aren't going for some wacky POD crap.

Nov 29, 2021, 10:00 AM

!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The answer is obvious...

Nov 29, 2021, 1:27 PM

and has been discussed and explained here ad nauseum: Revenue!

The difference in TV revenue between the B1G, SEC and the other 3 power conferences is huge and will become an even bigger gaping chasm in the future. The Little 12 was dying on the vine.

This isn't just about qualifying for the CFP. Please get that out of your mind. It's about total athletic budgets and funding all of the programs that depend on football. Having to pay the head coach more is a drop in the bucket.

Also, here in Texas, the Longhorn Network is a complete joke that non-UT fans laugh about and UT fans are embarrassed at. The quality of material and commentators is terrible and nobody watches it.

There is no doubt UT and OU are winners here, especially OU. If the SEC could, I bet they would take just UT.

A very logical business decision was made by both schools to leave a sinking ship for a battleship.

Hope that clarifies things.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

so I guess the ACC and Pac 12 schools are doomed as well***

Nov 29, 2021, 1:30 PM

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Where did I say that?

Nov 29, 2021, 1:45 PM

UT and OU were offered something too good to pass up. They went from the weakest conference to the strongest.

The ACC and Pac 12 are not complete basket cases like the Little 12. Should the Little 12 collapse, the two will likely end up stronger. Regardless, they will survive and do OK. But they will fall way short of the B1G and SEC. Unfortunately, that's just how it is.

The competitive landscape of the past, which was more equally distributed, is gone forever.

For the record, I utterly despise the SEC as much as anyone here. It pains me to see all this happening, but it does no good to deny reality.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

With the playoffs expanding to 12 teams

Nov 29, 2021, 1:33 PM
