Virginia wins another men’s tennis national title

May 22, 2022, 8:16 PM

Defeated Kentucky in the final 4-0. This one was unexpected. Virginia was the #7 seed and stunned defending champ #2 Florida in the quarters and then beat Kentucky in the final who had made a Cinderella run of their own.

National title #5 for Virginia. Previously won in 2013, 2015, 2016 and 2017.

Virginia's program did take a big step forward

May 22, 2022, 10:12 PM

in the late 2000s when they got money for a new facility from Boyd Tinsely of the Dave Matthews band.

They were actually considering dropping the sport at one point. Had no history before like 2005.

That seems to be a re-current theme at UVa. Thinking about dropping a sport, some big donor saves the program with $$, then win a national championship is sport almost dropped. Same thing with baseball.

Back in the day when Chuck Kriese was coaching the Tigers Virginia wasn't anything close to what they have been the last couple of decades.Everything they have won as far as conference regular season and tournament championships and National Championships have all happen since 2004.It's just ashame that Clemson hasn't been able to keep up what Chuck Kriese built in his long coaching career.
