Compulsory Public Service?

May 27, 2022, 7:27 AM

I was thinking about this while cutting grass on my palatial estate yesterday.

Not saying it's a good idea... just an idea. I, personally, don't really recall hearing it talked about much...

We change selective services to include all people who turn 18... and actually draft people. Lots of people.

They have a choice of:

***Public service... park workers, cleaning up trash, dmv workers, substitute teachers, school bus drivers, garbage dump workers, etc. Basically safe jobs that are somewhat menial in nature. Also, it would have to be jobs in demand. Mailmen... DOT workers, you name it. Make it a two year service.

***Military... self explainatory. Make it 1 year service. Make it more appealing by making the service term less.

***Any other categories that I'm not thinking of...

In adition to earning a fare wage, upon completion of the term, your college is paid for by Uncle Sam, partially paid for... whatever... but some sort of further education support.

For whatever reason, today's 18 year old seems ill-prepared to face adulthood than previous 18 year olds. This would give a decent transition time for folks to adapt... It would force them out of mom and dad's home, give them less time to sit around and get radicalized online, waste time playing video games, and in general turn into pieces of crap.

I think you put in some sort of ASVAB test to see where folks would land... A low score would end you up in the garbage dump, a very high score might get you into a substitute teacher gig, or maybe even Officer Training School... I don't know. I know you wouldn't want the next Albert Einstein mashing the button at the county garbage dump, and you wouldn't want the next DJ5 working as a mailman... mixing up routes, throwing packages through your windows, etc.

It would fill a lot of these jobs that are in demand.

A good dose of reality and public service might just be what this next generation needs to grab life by the horns.

Maybe it's a crazy idea - and would probably shake things up too much to ever be implemented, but I sorta like the idea so far.

I like the idea of 2 years of some type of public service. It's a great idea. I'm not a fan of drafting kids into the military. Our volunteer military is far better off with higher quality people and more motivated people than when we drafted kids into military service.

Additionally, 1 year is simply not an adequate amount of time to get anything useful out of a military draftee. Between in processing, boot camp, further training and out processing with 30 days leave to boot, you wouldn't produce much of value in 1 year.

We all owe something to our country and the military or public service is very helpful in realizing it's not all about the individual. I have no regrets for my 4 years in the military. You realize you're just one little cog in a big wheel.

I hear you on the military service...

1 year is too short... Maybe if you get "drafted" or whatever into public service, you can opt into the military as an alternative... then it would be volunteer, and you could have a longer service duration.

And what do you do with people that simply refuse to do it? And there will be millions. Do you put them in jail?

I like the idea, just like I like the idea of no civilians owning guns but it cannot be achieved. That train left the station...

How to enforce?

May 27, 2022, 8:04 AM [ in reply to Re: Compulsory Public Service? ]

Good question...

No to jail... maybe no voting rights? doubt that would change anybody's opinion AND I'm not not all about stripping peoples voting rights.

If you fund peoples college, then maybe it doesn't have to be compulsory.

You get rid of all this talk about free college and loan forgiveness and replace it with this. You want free college - put in your 2 years, or come out of pocket... you don't want college, then just go to work then.... but don't come trying to get gov't assistance if you dodged the service.

but I agree, a year of service would do wonders for young people in general.

May 27, 2022, 7:53 AM

But that doesn't sound like a quality of a free nation, and I don't have faith the government would do it right on the compensation/college end.

But I'm going to TU you for this:

...and you wouldn't want the next DJ5 working as a mailman... mixing up routes, throwing packages through your windows, etc.

May 27, 2022, 8:01 AM

and I hear your thoughts. That's what I struggle with on this idea. I think the government bungles nearly everything besides interstate systems and military...

It's surprising how many countries have compulsory military service... it's a wide range of countries with vastly different governments/societies.

Anyways, I just thought it might spur some interesting discussion that wasn't about school shootings or biden pooping his pants.

Putting the freedom part aside (I dunno, just rubs me wrong that a government could require this), I can't trust our feds to get it right. I also worry about it being used in some way for sinister intentions if the wrong people get in charge of it. Or, like, Richie McDouchebag gets his son the cake job beside Sen. O'Shitbag's son while everyone else gets screwed.

Lol@DJ…Anyway, it’s a good idea, but as others stated, our govt would fk it up.

We have an entire generation (already) that believes that they do not have to work to get everything they want; it will be impossible to change those minds.

I also don't understand why more kids don’t join the reserves, and get college paid for. One weekend a month for college tuition is a good deal. And there are so many other opportunities (rotc, military medical will freaking send you to school to be a PA).

Anyway, I always thought that people collecting unemployment should do the “public works” jobs until they find employment. For example: run the dmv on weekends, trash pick up, run homeless shelters, etc.

Kid graduates from high school. Kid wants to go to college, but cost is a concern. This is a huge portion of the population.

Still with me? Okay, let's proceed.

Kid signs up for this program. Once kid is enrolled, kid will be placed in a public service job that they are qualified for and hopefully interested in. Use ASVAB type testing and/or interview to determine this. Kid now works at this job. Kid is paid a fair wage for this job. Kid is free to quit at any time. If/when kid completes fulfills their time, Uncle Sam agrees to pay some portion of college, with no further obligation of the kid.

Each morning this kid wakes up, they chose whether or not to go to their paid job... just like me.

Slavery - no more than anybody else's job.

Would the government probably bungle it and it would be inefficient and corrupt AF - oh, you bet. But it isn't slavery.

…. soft, lazy and F’ed up in general. They accused us of doing drugs and listening to evil music. I even seem to recall the idea of mandatory service being tossed about back then.

Probably a little research would indicate that generational deterioration has been going on for “generations”. I blame it on their parents and grandparents.

How does that theme song go for “The 70’s Show”?

The public service option (military or other) for young adults has some merit. Maybe we could call the other public service option “The Peace Corps”?

I don't know much about the Peace Corps, so I read their wikipedia page. Okay... I skimmed it.

They are volunteer, and as far as I could read... unpaid. My proposal would include fair wage and college scholarship.

They are mostly serving in other countries... My proposal would be for domestic service.

Public service through existing government and NGO orgs should be encouraged, strongly, especially for students who are not sure what they want to do, but compulsory service would have devastating economic consequences (we're removing a huge portion of the labor pool and sticking them in positions with virtually no economic demand), and an affront to the very values on which this country was founded.

I can agree with this. It will give teens at least some work force experience before graduating and going into the real world.

Most kids are spoiled and don’t know what it’s like to earn wages and when they get out of schools they are completely full of anxiety while choosing career paths. You could also create a Career shadowing program at lower levels.

I can’t speak for all of them, as there are some that are extremely hard workers. I would even go as far as mandating X amount of earned hours to receive credits to graduate. If athletes can earn NIL, why can’t others start earning based on Merritt/ community engagement.
