I'm a little slow on this MD fiasco, but if the court rules

Jan 19, 2013, 5:10 PM

in favor of MD, doesn't that mean any team can just jump ship from their conference and not even worry about the buyout?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'm a little slow on this MD fiasco- It isnt a fiasco yet..

Yep.....if the courts rule in favor of UMD then no conference will ever be able to hold teams to any amount of buyout whether it be 100.00 or 100,000,000

It would also mean that the GOR signed by the Big 12 are literally meaningless.

MD knew and even voted on the ACC buy-out
all they are trying to do is to get a court to lower the buy-out amount, and spend tax-payers money with legal fees

It will work against them. They were effectively negotiating

in bad faith because they already knew they were going to the Big 12. They always had the option of telling the conference "We're leaving so we'll pay the old exit fee." It's like you letting your 2-year phone plan roll over. Good luck convincing a small-claims court that you really didn't mean it, 3 months later.

difference to Clemson.

The only place that would make any sense for Clemson to move is the SEC, and they have no reason to ask.

The Big 12 is a slow motion trainwreck IMO, and will likely be the first of the remaining five viable conferences to implode. Their current ten team membership and the need to add four to six teams to become a "super" conference make them a desperate animal right now.

If, if the ACC loses Virginia and its 2nd large media center, in Georgia Tech, how viable will the ACC be? I don't know any UVA people, but the GT people I know are wanting to leave for the Big 10.

Re:Why wouldn't it be?***

Jan 19, 2013, 9:25 PM

I'm not saying it would or would not be because I don't know. That's why I asked. If we lose them and probably replace them with Cinncinati and UCONN, will that be the Big Eastization of the ACC? It would look like it. Is that good or bad? Would the TV contract be reworked downward for losing 2 more big states and replacing them with 1. a smaller state school and 2. a city school with little state-wide appeal?

I would say this: if UVA and GT were to leave, there would be no way you can believe any President or AD who professes loyalty too the ACC. Everybody would be suspicious of everybody else and wonder who to trust, who has one foot out the door, etc. In that respect, losing UVA and GT would shake the ACC ground.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No way UVA leaves. They WILL NOT leave Va Tech.

Jan 19, 2013, 10:07 PM

The Big 12 is the most unstable league next to the Big East. They are scrambling to find teams, and any ACC team is short sighted and stupid to consider leaving for the Big 12.

The friends I have from Ga Tech don't want to leave the ACC, but Tech has had a tough time in its history being true to a league, remember, they left the SEC several decades ago. I'm not saying I think Ga Tech will leave the ACC, but if ANY of the current teams left, Ga Tech is the only one that would not be a huge surprise to me.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

UVA would leave for the Big 10, not the Big 12. And I don't

Jan 20, 2013, 8:39 AM

think they care about VT. They probably assume that VT has a spot in the SEC.

I'm tired of conference realignment. I wish they get it all over with one bang. If UVA, GT, UNC, Duke, VT and NC State are to eventually leave the ACC, do it and get it over with. The way things are evolving now is a Chinese water torture.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I doubt anybody leaves other than Maryland. Maryland

Jan 20, 2013, 9:00 AM

has suffered from a poor AD, and were deep in the red financially, and saw the B1G as a savior.

Maryland and Clemson were always the "outlaws" from the old pre Georgia Tech ACC. Even though it was Maryland and Clemson that first initiated the forming of the league due to bowl opportunity restrictions for football in the old Southern Conference.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You might be right. But if UVA does leave,

Jan 20, 2013, 9:06 AM

there will be another to follow because the only viable candidates for the Big 10 to get to 16 are in the ACC. So, if UVA leaves, no one in the ACC will trust or believe anyone in the ACC.

Re: I'm a little slow on this MD fiasco, but if the court rules

Jan 19, 2013, 7:03 PM

It's not quite that simple.
There will be some amount of a buyout that Maryland or any school will have to pay.
Orginally that amount was 20 million, but Swofford,(and 10 of the 12 schools) in the zeal to get Notre Dame to join the conference( in everything but footall of course) agreed to Notre Dame's demand to up the ante to 50 million just for the purpose of keeping the bigger schools( Clemson FSU,Duke,UNC,Miami,UNC,Va.Tech, and Ga.Tech)from bolting to other conferences.
So if Maryland wins they will still shell out some money, but even 20 or 25 mill is better than 50 mill.

"exit fee". It's like when the communists put up the Berlin Wall to keep in the Berliners from fleeing to the West. The Berlin Wall was the symbol of communism's failure. This exorbitant exit fee is a symbol of the ACC's failure. Why we didn't join FSU and Maryland in voting against it is something I'll never understand. When it's all said and done, I suspect that both parties will agree to a settlemnt that's less than half. If that pisses off Notre Dame, screw them. They got to keep their cake and eat it too by not having to bring in their football.

Have faith. The northern liberals who took over the University of Maryland are moving to the South to fix everything. Many traditions will be lost, but those traditions are outdated and rooted in the South's racist past.
