My kneejerk reactions.

Thanks to whoever it was that posted the link to the game. I watched it.

1. Peter Woods is a MAN.
2. Wiggins is another MAN.
3. The offense is a work in progress.
4. Hard to tell much from a Spring game; hard to get continuity on offense. Not too worried, but it wasn't as good as I was hoping to see.
5. Lack of presnap penalties was a very good thing to see.

But seriously:
Defense looks good
I’m feeling good about our kicking game
We will find out if Garrett is a miracle worker or not.

Cheers on the $2 hot dogs. I got 2. Lol.

I was a bit disappointed. No air raid. Hoping it's bc we lack the WRs. I was glad to see the middle,of the field used.

Wide Receivers & OL

Apr 16, 2023, 8:02 AM

There seems to be a lot of hand wringing about the lack of offense.

The defense does progress quicker than the offense (as previously stated) I think the reason for this is two fold. Defense of players excel at individual effort. The offensive line works as a unit, and the both the White & Orange are made up with a mix of starters & backups.

Even with the number of wide receivers out, do we really have anyone that stands out as a stud? Anyone you think will be first or second round NFL pick?

If the defense is really as good as it sounds, we would be smart to have a run heavy offense, that chews up clock. (Danny Ford)

Split squads and the defense is solid and deep. And the offense was missing quite a few players.

It is touch football on the QB!! There were many plays that would have been made if not for that. The spring game always favors this defense for mainly this reason.

Sounds like a very competitive game, with good plays made both ways, but the defense a bit ahead of the offense, just as it should be in the Spring game. Did Shipley get used at all? A lot of young players played well. This sounds like what we hoped it would be.

not having a good offense. I am saying not having an offense period, now going on three seasons. I understand this is just the Spring game and the teams are split, etc. But if there are no receivers and no vertical game, then the offense will struggle again. I just don't understand why, if we know we are thin in areas, we don't try the portal. Heck, Georgia and Alabama go after receivers in the portal. How can Dabo look into a tv camera and say that he thinks we will be explosive when this is what he has been watching all camp?

For all the people that want to blast me for this, just re-run your blast from when I expressed disappointment in Elliot minus Scott offense and Streeter offense, as well as DJ's ability. Also re-run the blast from when I expressed that Georgia and Bama and South Carolina, FSU really know how to use the portal and we avoid it. And if you're worried about our players that don't want someone coming in taking their job, and you don't want to cause hard feelings, just wait and see how fast our players hit the portal when they are not where they expect to be on the depth chart.

Apr 15, 2023, 4:22 PM [ in reply to It is getting old not having an offense. I did not say ]

We need receivers. The kind that will attack the football when its coming their way without worrying about the defender closing in.

Antonio Williams can't do this all by himself.

Adam Randall could be a hybrid of tight-end and receivers.

Will be interesting to see if Will Taylor can consistently be a downfield threat.

Will be even more interesting to see if Beaux Collins can stay healthy and tough.

Definitely looking for an offensive explosion once we get to the meat of our schedule in the fall.

Lots of time....but time will tell.

Not sure about will but honestly speaking, the kid needs to concentrate 24/7 on honing his baseball skills. He's got them but they're raw. Needs defensive development in the outfield. He should develop into a good solid hitter.

I'm inclined to think if he continues to try and do both, he won't develop great at either. Jmho.

This is a terrible take. If you didn’t notice a difference in the offensive scheme today you must be blind. We threw more to the middle of the field than we did to the boundary. And we had a screen that actually broke for a huge gain because the defense had to respect the middle of the field. Yes, it wasn’t a drastic difference and it needs some polishing but it is still spring, we had multiple WRs missing, and the Oline is in shambles. But what we saw today from the offense is a step in the right direction and worlds better than the Streeter method of throw it to the sideline with a hope and a prayer.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Maybe I'm too biased, but...

1

Apr 15, 2023, 6:24 PM

I thought the offense looked OK given what we had to work with. Our QBs (even thought they threes picks) all seemed to be mobile, not too inaccurate (it's the spring game) and seems (at least to me) to have a feel for the game... moving in the pocket, not locking on to their first option and looking to get the ball down the field as safely as a modern QB in today's game can be expected to do. Perfect? No. FWIW, I don't remember Watson or TL setting the world on fire in the spring game although it could be because I'm old and my memory is a feeble as an SCar fan's excuse for their team's historical level of utter failure (too early?).

Dude chill! I am no pumper but it is a spring game with split squads and touch football on the QB. You don’t think Cade would have made some plays on a few of those?

We also have a really good deep defense to boot.

Re: So geez what was final score?***

1

Apr 16, 2023, 8:14 AM [ in reply to Re: So geez what was final score?*** ]

I think 50,000 was a little generous. The north stands were probably 80-85% full and from what I could tell the south stands were pretty close to full (we were sitting in the south stands so I couldn’t get a good view). The west end zone was more than half full. Very few on the hill and both upper decks empty. I couldn’t see the south upper deck from my seat but I’m pretty sure no one was up there. I couldn’t see anyone at the railing. So basically if you took the people out of the west in zone and put them in the north stands both lower levels would have been pretty much full. I don’t know the capacity of each section but I would say in total a little less than half full so my estimate was about 35,000 or just a little higher.

BANKS POPE ?!?!

How did this article not mention Banks Pope !?!? SHAMEFUL

I'd never even heard of him before this afternoon and he was one of the highlights of the day!!

I know he's probably 4th string but he can clearly run routes and catch balls and is a load to tackle. Good for him that he made a name for himself today!

I hope I hear his name again this fall and I hope TNET remembers it next time too!

I must have seen a different game

Apr 15, 2023, 6:37 PM

I was there today. Watched a lot of matchups on the interior. Disappointing that so many starters were held but I understand the reason. No Ruke, XT, T Davis, Parks, Putnam, Shipley, etc. And those that we knew would not play due to injuries of which there were many. So, the "1st team" O line (White) was without Parks, Putnam, and Tate. I knew Tate was hurt, guess we wanted to see other players. Been to a lot of spring games - maybe 30 or so over the past 50 years.
Probably a good idea to hold those D lineman. If they had played I'm not sure any of the QB's would have had time for much more than a bubble screen. The "1's" on the O line struggled - but they struggled against 2nd and 3rd team players. No idea what the issue is but if you couldn't see that this O line is a major work in progress then your just kidding yourself. A couple of the missing O line starters have been around for multiple years. They have struggled mightily so I don't see them as any answer. I am holding out hope for Tate.
Just flat out zero foot speed at receiver. Yes, I know who is injured and they are not fast either. Going to take a couple years to get some foot speed to develop that vertical game. I'm sure we will get there. Nothing wrong with L Riley or his scheme but he can't do it with what we have seen thus far.
When they failed to get any separation today the QB's tried their best to fit it into some tight windows. Not going to knock any of the QB's but they will just have to throw it away in a real game.
It was one of the more painful games to watch that I have witnessed considering the recruiting rankings and expectations. And yes, Peter Woods did look good. Put him very close to Ruke and TD as of this moment and that's pretty darn good. Just my 2 cents. Lots of holes to fill before the first game and light years from a Bama or UGA type team.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I must have seen a different game

1

Apr 16, 2023, 8:20 AM

There were at least a couple of plays where wide receivers got separation but the ball was thrown late and/or had too much air under it allowing the DB to recover and break up the play. One of them was right in front of us and there was enough separation it could have easily been a TD if the ball had been delivered on time. The ball was still in Cade’s hand at the moment it should have hit the receiver. Cade’s long balls have way too high of a trajectory. One of them looked like he threw it straight up into the air.

Agreed, that should have been a walk in TD. And Cade threw a couple moonballs where I guess he is trying to drop it in over the shoulder. There was definite huge separation on that single play against a patchwork secondary with lots of reserves but in general not much separation on the other 95% of the plays. Not that he panned out, but Ladson ran wild in his spring game debut. Got open all day against a similar talent level on D. Those days are gone.

Re: TNET: Spring Game Observations: Offense missing key pieces, Peter Woods leads mid-years

Apr 15, 2023, 6:04 PM

Because there was not any O-Line continuity for either Orange offense or White offense, there was next to no chance that either offense would look good against White defense or Orange Defense, respectively.

Both squads had patchwork O-Lines, which is actually good because we really needed to get a bunch of O-Linemen out there for some extensive live work.

QB play: We all (including me) need to take a deep breath and get our minds around the fact that we have inexperienced QBs (as far as live game PT) from the top to the bottom of the depth chart.

(*). Inexperience QB + new offensive scheme + hardly any functioning WRs (throughout the Spring) = erratic offense output.

Also, our depth on defense at all positions except LB meant that our defense units was more than ready to dominate our offense units.

(***). It will be a whole new world when our experienced OL starters from last year play at the same time. (LT is the only not-yet-answered question.). RB and TE groups are good enough to help our inexperienced QBs grow into their jobs. WR unit will be our best since 2020.

We are going to have a fine year, good chance to win the ACC, good bowl, and maybe CFP.

Re: TNET: Spring Game Observations: Offense missing key pieces, Peter Woods leads mid-years

Apr 16, 2023, 11:04 PM

Ok folks. I am no pumper. But there seems to be major concern over the offense which is unwarranted at this point. Below are the reasons why:

1. Name the defenses that we will face that are better than what we saw today. This defense is going to be very very good. If it is not a top ten defense then we know Wes was a mistake.

2. 2 hand touch on the QB. The QBs would have made some more plays without that rule. Really favors the defense.

3. New offense.

4. The defense knows what is coming they see it everyday in practice.

5. Several starting and 2 deep receivers out. Excited about Noble J. I thought he really flashed today.

6. No Shipley.

7. No offensive line continuity with all the moving parts.

Relax at this point. We will judge when the season starts.
