Do we offer scholarships to kickers/punters out of high school or do they have to "earn" a scholarship once on campus?
Reason I am asking is because I talked with a highly rated kicking recruit yesterday (who is a Clemson fan btw) who told me he is visiting SCar this weekend and may choose them if they offer a scholarship.
I am interested in seeing what you guys think regardless of what we do.
Do you offer a scholarship to a kicker/punter out of high school to get a highly rated one or do you go the walk-on and earn a scholarship route?
but we have offered scholarships to kickers in the past. Lakip and Spence were offered scholarships. Catman was a walkon and Huegel were walk ons who earned scholarships. I wished we would have not offered a scholarship to Spence and let him walk on that way we wouldn't have 2 scholarships tied to two place kickers in the same class.
We will probably award a scholarship to whoever wins the punting job (hopefully Spiers). We don't currently have any offers that I'm aware of for future kickers.
I think I like the walk-on route better. Lakip was a head case, and Spence didn't beat out Huegel. There are always drawbacks though...Teasdall wasn't a great punter but he got the job done and did very good in the playoff and championship game.
We do offer kickers or punters out of HS. Only the most highly-rated among kickers get full scholarship offers. Alex Spence is our backup and he was a full offer as far as I know. We recruit a lot more as walk-ons, preferred walk-ons. The competition produces the starter.
