what is "germans"

Nov 15, 2019, 11:30 AM

please enlighten me on the use of the phrase "maybe germans". I have been reading posts on this site for a while now and I guess I missed something. Did it come from the word germane?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I use it (germains too) to say my post may already be news or known to board.

It is a line from "Animal House" and is used to say

"This already may be common knowledge, but it is new to me." or "Someone may have already posted this information, but I am posting it also."

That's NOT what the line in Animal House refers.........

to. It's stupid the way it's used on TNet.

OK, I'll help by saying "but the Germans didn't bomb Pearl Harbor."

Which is something everyone else already knows because it's been discussed previously on TNet, but I'm clueless and didn't know it's a beaten horse.

Previous replies give the backstory on it but it means something that's been posted before and in some cases too often. It's akin to beating a dead horse.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It is used to mean "redundant", "already posted", but

Nov 15, 2019, 12:08 PM

actually comes from John Belushi being stupid, not redundant, which I guess is even more ironic.

here is how it came to be

Nov 15, 2019, 12:51 PM

Early in bowden years we had one of our typical bad losses. Rev Dodd made a speach that started with the famous line from Animal House. Was it over when the Germans bombed pearl Harbor.

Of course somebody corrected him... They always do...

But that line was repeated many times.

In fact it got repeated so many times that instead of writing the whole sentence out people just started shortening it to Germans

And that is how it happened

A reference to a phrase from the movie "Animal House," co-opted by a bunch of moronic keyboard jockeys back in the early 2000s to shame posters for not keeping constant tabs on the board posts and having the audacity to ask about something that someone else had already posted about.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

And many of those same keyboard jockeys
