Is there a link to an actual article on Brownell incident?

May 1, 2021, 9:27 AM

I've seen several posts with people ranting (par for the course here on TNET), but, sadly, no one has seen fit to link any sort of credible media source for the alleged incident.

Does anyone have anything they can share? Google says nothing to me.

No, but, well, you know .... that deal about Brownell.

It's a 45 minute video by the player's Dad.

all i know is go read the full fb post including comments. the parents were both upset and reached out to the AD with no reply. Now someone replyed that the BOT and Swann family who are named after the new practice facility will be notified. This should grow into something if true. Not a good look för DRad either. Go read it all.

Yep, with everything being video, and voice recorded in this world that we live in, where is the tape or digital recording of these allegations against Brad. And, I thought that practices were recorded, and that they could go back and pull up any part of a practice. Where are the recordings of this happening, or it didn't happen!!!

While I never played college football, I did play H.S.

varsity football, and it was common to get a tirade of profanity from your coaches, specifically your position coaches. Now, maybe things have changed from the mid to late 70's to now, but that type of verbal tirades were common in practice 40 years ago. Those same coaches
would hug your neck after practice was over.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I played high school football 75-78 and I never heard

May 1, 2021, 11:50 AM

that kind of language from the coaches. Some might yell at you, but it was never such profanity laced personally degrading stuff.

Well, I know my coaches and the teams we played (4A) had

May 1, 2021, 1:12 PM

no problem dropping profanity. Now, if you played at a private school, then I cannot comment on those schools as we didn't play any private schools on our schedules.

It all boils down to the individual coaches. Again, we

May 1, 2021, 1:38 PM

(the players) didn't think twice about the profanity in the mid/late 70's. It's football. We would occasionally have player fights in practice. Football is a violent sport. Even if a couple of guys got into a fight, once the practice was over, they were still friends and teammates.

Nobody complained about the coaches using profanity.

I don't have facebook, so your post actually gave me insight into what is going on. A few thoughts...

1) I don't know Tommy Donehue (one of the commenters), but he was spot on: "This is big time ACC basketball. Hate to break it to you but this happens everywhere. If your son is too soft to take it then maybe he needs to go play church league ball. You're trying to slander Brownell's name because of your walk-on son that nobody has ever heard of."

2) That this is a parent ranting on Facebook tells me everything I really need to know. This is a non-event, other than a helicopter parent screaming about a sport coach verbally 'encouraging' his child. I'm embarrassed for the parent. I'm really embarrassed for the college student who is undoubtedly bearing the brunt of his dad's very public melt down.

3) Brownell may not be the right guy for Clemson. I don't know. But, this sort of thing doesn't diminish him in my eyes at all. If anything, it has the opposite effect. I actually like the fact that CBB is giving some tough coaching to walk-ons.

Spot on. Him tagging everything makes it obvious that he’s trying to go viral and internet famous. What a complete loser. I would be embarrassed if that was my dad.

Before you run down the parent you need to watch the video

May 1, 2021, 10:19 AM [ in reply to Thanks ]

Never during it did he say that the parents nor the player had any expectations of being more than a walk on. This isn’t a case of helicopter parents of a snowflake. This is a case of CBB taking his frustrations out on the walk-on’s. Bad culture.

Watch the video. I’m done with Brownell. I hope he gets canned.

You realize walk ons have a role on the team right? If they are being lazy, then they aren’t making the team better. Where is the video?

May 1, 2021, 10:41 AM [ in reply to Thanks ]

Don’t know if any of the details are true but we have to believe that tough coaching can be done without profanity laced insults. I am sorry but everyone is not motivated or encouraged by being cussed at or degraded. Is it possible that some of our more productive players left the program due to this kind of “tough” love coaching? Is it possible that some of our players did not play as hard as they could have for a coach that “possibly” verbally abused them? IF the answer is yes to either of these two questions then I think we can all see a potential problem. Also I still believe a good coach tries to treat the practice team walk on player the same as the star quarterback or point guard. If this kind of mentality makes me a snowflake or a softie then I just disagree with that thought. Ask yourself If your boss cussed at you not around you but at you and called you names to encourage you to be a better worker would you be a better worker or look for a new job.

The players that play for Saban and Coach K know what they are signing up for. People that enlist in the military know what basic camp is going to be like. There are different coaching styles. I do not agree with everyone’s style. The last time I looked, kids were lining up to play for Saban and Coach K. Some student athletes thrive on the structure and tough love. As long as college and pro sports team’s play, some coaches are going to cuss and direct it at their players.

How do you know it isn't true and was berrating the kid at a walk-on's expence to motivate the team and it backfired? How do you know this is why a number of players have transfered? Let us wait till all the facts come in...

This should be looked at by leadership if for no other reason than improving our program. Why wouldn’t we all be for the board & athletic director seeing this to challenge our program to be better?

Maybe we could all be equal team members with one goal or maybe this is completely false but criticism can be used to make us all better.

Don’t attack this guy, attack our program running the best it can!

I would suggest watching the actual video. It’s actually very convincing.

Also, Aamir posted a tweet that somewhat validates the truthfulness of what is said in the video. See here:

https://mobile.twitter.com/EarlShmitty_/status/1388310171206799361

The tweet is actually a quote from the video. Later, the mother of the walk-on player reposts aamir’s tweet and says she loves him like a son. To me that is a soft endorsement from the team’s former best player.
