"could not extend hotel benefits"

Oct 20, 2014, 11:22 AM

So I'm guessing they are still paying their rent, but have no place to stay now?

Hmmm..how the F does that work?

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Sounds like a pisssing contest between the developer

Oct 20, 2014, 11:33 AM

and the city. The developer must have not paid someone enough money to get things taken care of.

originally it was because they couldn't get fire trucks

Oct 20, 2014, 11:43 AM

in the complex because of the nonexistent stormwater control methods s and impassable roads. Not sure if that was resolved properly or not, or there are more "political" issues now.

I feel like only really rich kids are trying to live in

Oct 20, 2014, 11:48 AM

those so I have no problem with their being inconvenienced at all.

badge-donor-05yr.jpgringofhonor-aero.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Clemson is well on its way to being a rich kid school.

Oct 20, 2014, 11:55 AM

Ride around and see where students are staying, what they're driving, and where they're spending money around town. I used to say back in the day that if you were going to be a bum and live cheap, Clemson was the place to do it. That is FAR from being the case these days. The other amazing thing to me is how many celebrities are sending kids to Clemson. It has become exactly what we used to deride UVA and UNC for being back in my day.

ringofhonor-rhtig.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I guess some of that comes with the improved academic rep

Oct 20, 2014, 11:57 AM

But I don't get why an improved reputation has to mean that the only food available in the area is from chains. It's hard to blame chains from wanting to open up places where they can make money, but it would be nice if Clemson would give preference to local businesses.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Clemson needs to give preference

Oct 20, 2014, 11:59 AM

to who is going to generate tax revenue. It is the students that need to learn to support the locals first.

badge-donor-05yr.jpgringofhonor-aero.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That is valid. But think of your average college freshmen,

It's WAY hard to make money in the restaurant business these

days. In a small market like Clemson, the chains that have it down to a science can survive far better than any local. Rock Hill suffers from that same thing, and the population is 4 times greater.

ringofhonor-rhtig.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think the summers is what kills the restaurants

Oct 20, 2014, 12:07 PM

There just aren't enough students staying for the summer and definitely not enough locals to be able to support the bar/restaurant business, the chains survive because they can keep the expenses down

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That's sort of what I thought

Oct 20, 2014, 12:09 PM [ in reply to It's WAY hard to make money in the restaurant business these ]

And it's why I wish Clemson could offer something to local business-people who will open something.

I even heard McClure's Books was closing. While I'm not surprised, that means there aren't any bookstores in Clemson besides the campus "bookstore" that barely sells books.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

There aren't many bookstores anywhere, anymore.

Oct 20, 2014, 12:11 PM

There were some great bookstores in Charlotte that have fallen by the wayside thanks to the digital age.

ringofhonor-rhtig.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

This is why I have never gone full bore with my idea for a

place. Everything can be 99.9% perfect and things still not work. It seems the biggest key is to have a lot of friends, who have friends they will bring with them. Get that base of regulars built up quick, and treat them right every time.

badge-donor-05yr.jpgringofhonor-aero.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

What you envision would have a really hard time making

Oct 20, 2014, 12:24 PM

ends meet in Clemson. You need alcohol sales, and three fourths of your target market is under age. Then you need people coming out to see bands, but folks aren't coming to see bands and drink free refill iced tea all night. Finally, you run into the same problem with food sales that any locally owned business does...you aren't getting the franchise buying power for your food and other supplies, so the cost of doing business drives the prices into the upscale range, which doesn't bode well for a beer & BBQ joint unless you're in a tourist locale with a constant traffic stream. I've seen at least three places that never even got the doors open across from Winthrop that had roughly the same idea. And nearly everything across the street from Winthrop is some kind of franchise.

ringofhonor-rhtig.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yep. The Astro idea was the pipe dream of pipe dreams.

Oct 20, 2014, 12:37 PM

I think the Georgia Theater works because of the size of Athens and the talent that has been cultivated at that place. My joint would almost have to be here or Greenville. If Greenville, I'd arrange some type of party bus type deal to get the Clemson students that wanted to go see a show.

bar scene? Especially in Clemson--it's the only reason I can explain why top of the tavern, Nicks, or Sloan Street tap room are still open.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Um, top of the tavern is open because you can smoke in there

Oct 20, 2014, 1:30 PM

and the old timers go on Sunday too.

stubborn to let it close. I don't know enough about Nick's to make a call on that, but obviously they do enough business to stay there, because I imagine the rents downtown are not cheap.

ringofhonor-rhtig.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Is it just the natural progression of any school?

Oct 20, 2014, 11:57 AM [ in reply to Clemson is well on its way to being a rich kid school. ]

When getting into a lot of 3rd and 4th generation families sending kids, does the population just change?

badge-donor-05yr.jpgringofhonor-aero.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Don't think it's the legacies, so much as...

Oct 20, 2014, 11:59 AM

it's the kind of kids Clemson is attracting now and the expectations they have for a school. Some of those expectations probably come from the country, and the whole south, being so much more affluent than it was years ago.

It's a relatively safe and picturesque rural setting with

nationally recognized major sports that are on campus and thriving Greek system in place. For a lot of those folks from out of state, it's an idyllic Ivy League-like college experience and a degree that has value for a quarter of the price.

ringofhonor-rhtig.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yep. Nothing wrong with those folks, but...

Oct 20, 2014, 12:11 PM

it would be nice if attracting more affluent people, or just attracting a broader range of people, wouldn't mean that the place has to look like everywhere else.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

And the more affluent giving it away easier than before.

Oct 20, 2014, 12:09 PM [ in reply to Don't think it's the legacies, so much as... ]

I also think we are moving towards the top of a curve where only rich kids will go to college for a while. You know the old saying, "If you can afford college, why go?"

badge-donor-05yr.jpgringofhonor-aero.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I noticed that change in the early 2000's.

Oct 20, 2014, 12:01 PM [ in reply to Clemson is well on its way to being a rich kid school. ]

My wife, who had never been to Clemson before 2003, said she saw a difference from the games we went to in 2003 to the games we attended in 2004.

Every time I go back I always wonder what it would be like to be living like I made 70-80K year, but being a college kid.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

This is the truth. It's not uncommon to see 20 year olds

Oct 20, 2014, 12:07 PM [ in reply to Clemson is well on its way to being a rich kid school. ]

riding around in brand new Escalades. The small town feeling is now gone, it just isn't the place I grew up going to. Traffic has become a nightmare, too. Seneca, Clemson, Pendleton, and Anderson are all starting to run together these days. There's a new development, supposedly some apartments, etc. for Tri County tech students that just got cleared right at 76 and 187.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgringofhonor-lakebum1-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Seems like I read there is going to be a dedicated complex

Oct 20, 2014, 12:09 PM

for Bridge students on or near campus too, and that the Bridge is going to expand size yet again.

ringofhonor-rhtig.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Bridge is another thing that's helped change clemson

Oct 20, 2014, 12:16 PM

Now people don't have to look elsewhere if they don't get in, they can just go bridge and be good to go. While I think it is a good thing for many, it's definitely changed the dynamics of the clemson experience.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgringofhonor-lakebum1-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

My favorite burn for the bridge students is...

Oct 20, 2014, 1:40 PM

"How does it feel to know Clemson admits developmentally disabled people over you?"

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Oct 20, 2014, 1:24 PM [ in reply to Seems like I read there is going to be a dedicated complex ]

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

They've moved on from Highpointe

Oct 20, 2014, 1:27 PM

The bridge students are like a swarm of locusts, moving from apartment complex to apartment complex.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgringofhonor-lakebum1-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Are they so bad to live with the complexes just can't take

Oct 20, 2014, 2:11 PM

it? Or is it more that somebody else's gear needs greased?

badge-donor-05yr.jpgringofhonor-aero.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

This is pure speculation on my part, but I'd imagine

Oct 20, 2014, 2:17 PM

the no alcohol anywhere rules the bridge students have to live by were driving away potential residents. Who wants to not drink at the pool or be hassled by cops all of the time? In that case, it would make sense to move them somewhere where they could be more isolated and easier to police. I have no idea where they live now.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgringofhonor-lakebum1-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

They policed pretty well at Highpointe, actually.

Oct 20, 2014, 3:23 PM

Highpointe was never intended to be the Bridge complex, but according to my sources, Tom Winkopp struck a deal with Clemson when real estate tanked that kept him from defaulting on some serious loans on that project.

ringofhonor-rhtig.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Aren't these the $850/ student places?***

Oct 20, 2014, 11:55 AM

Yep.

Oct 20, 2014, 2:32 PM

Though I doubt anybody will ever live in them at this rate.
