Is UNC a dark horse in this whole realignment deal?

May 18, 2012, 4:48 PM

Bear with me for a second...

Could the whine & cheese baby blue bellies usurp one of the other ACC squads and land a coveted spot in the one of the other super conferences?

Yes, they have little in the way of football tradition, but they do have an ample amount of monetary resources, a massive alumni base and a strong brand.

If the any of the current ACC members do defect and the dominoes begin to fall, I feel like UNC would be more desirable to the SEC than NCSU. UNC is North Carolina. The question is whether they would go down with the ACC in flames or surprise everyone and make a preemptive move.

Just the thought of the blue bloods getting a seat at the SEC table makes my cringe.

Absolutely...

Swoffie currently working on a deal to pit the ACC champ vs. The BE champ at Dorman High School in what's being called a "grand slam" for forgotten conferences.

it would ruin the Dook rivalry*****

Had the same discussion with a co-worker today.

In a melt-down, of which the ACC seems to be on the precipice, each university will look after it's own best interests.

Swofford and UNC will be bowing down at Mike Slive's feet if this ship keeps taking on water.

Ask Mizzou and Texas AM how important long-standing rivalries are in the mode of self-preservation.

The only conference they would go to would be the B1G. I actually think Maryland, UVA, and UNC might all go there if the ACC loses Clemson, FSU, Miami, and GT to the Big 12.

Owens, where is VT in your prognostication?

May 18, 2012, 5:18 PM

I think the Big 12 looks at VT before all those mentioned to the Big 12 except FSU. Also, in the shake up you have mentioned, Notre Dame becomes a player because the new playoff and the new bowl agreement are not working in the favor of independents. There will no longer be a "Notre Dame" rule like it was in the BCS.

The part to be concerned about is that once we start realizing who all the players are, Clemson does not offer as much TV market or brand as several schools.

VT to SEC

I think VT can't leave UVA behind in the ACC for political reasons until Clemson & FSU bolt for the Big 12. VT might even have to wait until UVA gets an invitation from the B1G.

I would imagine all the major conferences will expand

That's an interesting idea of UNC, UVA and Maryland joining the Big Ten. I can see those three plus Notre Dame going Big Ten. Clemson, GT, FSU and Miami to the Big XII. VT and NC State to the SEC. Duke and UNC can still play every year in any sport; Louisville and Kentucky do. I can then see the remaining Big East/ACC forming a basketball-heavy league that could occasionally get a team in the national title hunt (i.e. Boise) once in a blue moon.

If a conference wants to strengthen its RPI UNC wouldn't...

May 18, 2012, 5:14 PM

fit. If they are looking for a cream puff they sure wouldn't be flirting with FSU or Clemson.

UNC could get into the SEC tommorrow if they wanted.***
