Ice cubes freeze on the top first and from the outside in
Water expands as it freezes - just one of the many wonderful and amazing properties of water that I can babble on for hours about
The spikes form when a small hole appears in the frozen surface and liquid is slowly pushed through, freezing as it goes

What's going on here? This is what I use in the meat freezer in case the power goes out. But over time, the ice around the coin has compressed, turning the ice under the coin into a pedestal.

thaws enough where the food spoiled, but freezes up again before you can check, you'll find the quarter somewhere in the middle/bottom of the glass, rather than on the top.
