There are two ways to stop Kim Un's threat.

Jul 4, 2017, 7:56 PM

The first and easiest on the world is to shut down trade with China until they remove him from office. The second way is to blow him off the face of humanity with our military.

I fear that the "threat" of N. Korea is way, way overblown. Yes he has nuclear, but he hasn't threatened us any more than his father and grandfather. They wan't to be bought off...we just aren't playing that game anymore. It worked in the past...but we're not falling for it again.

He has zero chance of striking the U.S. with a ballistic missile...1. it would never make it, 2. we would vaporize him and his headquarters and the Chinese would applaud.

If an attempt were imminent I'm confident that his inner circle of military men would take him out. They know what would happen....and they know that they and their families would be the first to die. If it even begins to get close, his circle or the Chinese will take him out.

My overiding concern is the rhetoric from our govt. "Our strategic patience is at an end. We need to protect our allies in the region Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Israel er...I mean S. Korea, Japan and Thailand.

I'm starting to feel the Iraq/WMD .... we have to act now before it's too late argument building.

The best policy toward N.Korea? Ignore them.

I hope you're right about him just wanting paid off.

His father and grandfather didn't have nukes or ballistic missiles.

> His father and grandfather didn't have nukes or
> ballistic missiles.

N. Korea had a nuclear weapons program going back to the 90's. They blamed Bush's policy toward the DPRK for 'making them a nuclear state' in the 2000's.

"In 2003, North Korea again announced its withdrawal from the Nuclear Proliferation Treaty.[13] In 2005, it admitted to having nuclear weapons but vowed to close the nuclear program.[19][20]

October of 2006 they detonated their first underground weapon.

As far as ballistic missiles, they've had them since the 60's.: "In the 1960s, DPRK first received shipments of short-range ballistic missiles from its main ally, the Soviet Union. The first weapons of this kind to be delivered were the tactical FROG-series.[119] In the late 1970s or early 1980s, the DPRK received several longer range Scud-B missiles from Egypt (which in turn received those missiles from the USSR, Bulgaria and Poland). The USSR had refused to supply Scuds to North Korea.[119] A local production basis was established, and the first modified copy was named Hwasong-5. With time, more advanced types of missiles were developed. Eventually North Korea equipped itself with ballistic missiles, capable of reaching Japan. In the 1990s, North Korea sold medium-sized nuclear capable missiles to Pakistan in a deal facilitated by China.[120]

Kim Jung Un came to power in 2011, succeeding his father Kim Jung Il. The father and grandfather have a long history of threatening to re-ignite the Korean war unless they were paid off. The were paid of many times, the idea being if you could bring them to the table a final peace could be had in the region. Unfortunately, however, saber-rattling is more profitable than peace.

I say ignore them. We gain nothing by engaging in this fantasy they're trying to create, yet again.

I think he wants to get paid off, but he will want that forever. I say we give him nothing. He will be getting nukes anyway.

He doesn't really have to strike the US mainland, does he?

Jul 4, 2017, 11:31 PM [ in reply to Re: There are two ways to stop Kim Un's threat. ]

The North Korean threat is very real. He can hit Japan. He can hit South Korea. And how many US troops could he hit there?

Thinking that someone in his inner circle will stop him is way off base. Thinking China will off him is not in the ball park either. These things could have already been done - before he executed the people he did.

The Chinese may not want to see the US in a war with NK, but they are doing nothing to stop it. And, in the end, they are not our friends either. Who do you think will continue to supply oil and arms to NK when this thing does blow up?

Ignore them? That may work with a three year old but this is a nation that does not like us, and is even responsible for the death of a US citizen because he "stole" a poster.

I do not want us to be at war - not with NK or anyone for that matter. But NK is a threat, and even more than it has been in the past.

Is there no reason to act beyond eminent threat

Jul 5, 2017, 7:39 AM [ in reply to Re: There are two ways to stop Kim Un's threat. ]

to the US mainland? That's very Rand Paul thinking. Not saying it's right or wrong, but I can't see any place in the world more deserving of our attention if we are an involved member of the world community.

#1) They are a threat to key allies and partners of ours. Japan, South Korea and China. And as was mentioned, there are plenty of US citizens in these areas and US military in the region.

#2) The man is effectively running the largest prison in the world. 25 million people, brainwashed and controlled. Offenses that lead to prison include "not showing the leader enough enthusiasm". Does no one else think that if this regime falls, the people of North Korea will want to know how we could let it stand for so long?

#2 is an excellent point.

Never heard it framed like that.

I'd say that's a similar problem in many poverty stricken, war torn countries too.

capable of hitting the US. He is shooting missiles with enough power to travel 5000 miles, but he cannot us a trajectory for a missile to travel that far. Can we shoot them out of the sky with 100% accuracy? Who knows, I don't want to test that theory.

who is also the largest foreign holder of U.S. debt? The military option sounds easier than that.

Why should anyone be concerned about a mental case

Jul 5, 2017, 8:31 AM

having nukes? Or a terrorist supporting regime in the Middle East having nukes?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Our own mental case has the most nukes in the world.

Jul 5, 2017, 9:12 AM

I am concerned.

2024 white level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The second option may reate over 100 million deaths.

Jul 5, 2017, 10:27 AM

No Japan, no South Korea, and who knows after that. Who knows what else happens. Who knows who else gets involved. The world economy would go into a death spiral too. It would make WWII look like a fraternity bar fight.

Only some of us will be able to seek proper healthcare after the biological weapons sneak into the US. I was just talking about the 100 million abroad. :)
