Is there an unofficial embargo against the American Conf?

Aug 14, 2015, 10:52 AM

Seems like American Conference teams would make for good non-conference/"cupcake" games- East Carolina, UCF, USF, Cincinnati, Houston, SMU, but I wonder if the ACC doesn't want to "legitimize" the league by playing them. I think we'd smoke any team in the American, but could imagine Wake or UVA easily dropping a game and opening the league to criticism from people in the SEC or Big 10.

I'm glad we're scheduling Louisiana Tech vs. App State/ Ga Southern, I even get the reason to have in state 1-AA schools like Citadel, Furman or Coastal. Just wish we would schedule American/ Conf. USA over Sun Belt or MAC schools.

No one wants to schedule them because they will beat you

ask UNC last year (gave up 70 points to ECU) or SCU this year (will get beat at home by UCF)

Best Is The Standard

They're too "middle of the pack"

for a nonconference game you want either cupcakes, or major opponents. Very few of the AAC teams are true cupcakes, and even the good teams from the conference don't have the name recognition to move you up the polls if you beat them.

It's a no win situation.

People don't give those teams much more respect than they give 1 AA schools, so beating them doesn't give you much of a boost, and they can get good talent at those schools and are dangerous to maybe deliver an L.

ECU and UCF have been on teams' schedules

I know NC State and VT have played ECU recently. I think VT plays ECU this year again. Cincinnati plays Miami this year. USF plays FSU.

So, actually, ACC teams are playing a bunch of American teams.

Didn't realize so many ACC teams scheduled them

I guess I didn't realize because Clemson hasn't scheduled many games with the American.

And that's a good point about being middle of the road, there's no "bump" in recognition for a win, but huge downside if one sneaks up on you. I bet they all want a home and home too, and I wouldn't want to travel to any of these schools. The math of losing one home game the next year doesn't make up for the relatively small increase in revenue this year because you're playing a more entertaining opponent.
