Is the reflection pond froze over?

Can’t remember if it did 92-96 when I was there. Perhaps once but my gears don’t work like they used too. I’m guessing it would have been out of state students from up north who brought skates, doubtful any in state students would think to own or bring a pair. Who has memories? What year? I’d also imagine these days they would put a stop to it rather quickly.

its so windy, the waves/ripples may be keeping the amount of ice down

It did one year between the years of 1974 to 1977 when I was up there. I too remember thinking where did all these ice skates come from. My chemistry prof Dr. Geldard was even out there skating.

I remember the skating as well. The few times it snowed, it felt like a winter carnival. A lot of good natured snow ball melees.

69-73...Most our hall consisted of student from up North and it was a "suitcase college" then, so we had a lot of time on our hand on non-football weekends. Believe it froze over twice when they shut down the fountains. We also put laundry detergent flakes in the pond which was awesome... kind of like fake snow. One time even had a canoe in it. Dean Cox put us room restriction the rest of that semester for that. Luckily there were only 3 weeks left in my freshman Spring semester. We had to sign out whenever we left our hall (E-5) and could only go to Harcombe, classes and the library...it was remarkable how often we would sign out and go to the library to study! (wink, wink)!

I got thousand of stories. Would be a great hardback book. Here's one...
For those students who now have all the individual shower stalls, let me take you back in time. The showers in the tin cans, back in the day, consisted of a large, fully tiled communal room with 4 or 5 shower heads, a drain or two and only one entrance/exit opening about 30" wide in the middle of one wall.
We would take a couple of the doors (closet panel) from our rooms, turn them to a horizonal position, place towels between the doors and tiled entry way and also cover the drains. We then proceed to turn on all the shower heads and convert the room into our own private heated swimming pool around 5 -6' deep.
We calculated that the water in the shower would maintain adequate pressure of the doors and towels as well as the drains. After about 15 minutes of 10-15 guys swimming/frolicking naked in this "Spa" (mind you the water was still rising) having a grand old time, we start hearing a strange sound and then, both doors snapped in half and our "swamp was drained," flooding the entire toilet area (and the some).
Seems like no one had calculated the pressure and saturation factor on the 3/4" door panels, but what do you expect, we were just Freshman and none of us had taken any engineering courses!
Ps: The culprits (insert "we") were never found out and it became a "cold case". I'm sure the statue
of limitation is in effect. FYI: Alcohol may have contributed to this event.

Yea, we double and triple stacked the door to get to 5-6 ft...engineering 101! We used the 55 gallon metal drum (inverted of course) at the end of the hall to climb into our "Hot Tub". We figured we could remove the towels from the drains to lower the water level and we could just walk out...however, the doors splitting made that a mute issue.

I think a card table was used to block the entrance, not positive. And towels to cover the drain. Turned all 6 shower heads on full hot, created a makeshift hot tub. I want to say it was only about a foot deep, but it sufficed for a couple guys to bring an innertube and float around. Also had a styrofoam cooler with beer, and a bong...

Another story...We went through several Hall Monitors...they just couldn't "understand us". I think what put one over the edge is when we leaned a 55 gal metal drum (trash can at the end of the E-5 Hall in Johnstone) that we filled with H20. When he opened his door the next morning, he had his own personal "Niagara Falls" in his room. He transferred (didn't think he used the Portal) out the next day.

The jet ski was invented after I graitated. We were limited to the "draft" of canoes and John boats.

when it didn't get above freezing for a couple weeks at one stretch which is unusual for upstate SC. The freeze line went down a couple of feet and busted a lot of water pipes. I was in high school and the cold didn't hurt as bad as it does now. The library pond had a thick slab of ice on it and there were a lot of skaters; we skated on it in our Keds until campus security put a stop to it.
