Is my friend an idiot or a genius?

I know a guy that likes drinking wine with his friends. He came across a rare bottle online for $1800. It’s a double magnum 98 point Cabernet Sauvignon that retailed for $4K when originally sold in 2007. Only 20 bottles were produced. He believes the huge retailer didn’t know what they had so they just multiplied their price for a 750ml bottle by four and called it a day.

One of the other bottles just sold at auction for $5,500 in February.

Is my friend a genius for buying something that he can flip for 2-3X immediately or an idiot because he’s going to hold onto the bottle and inevitably come up with an excuse to drink it himself with friends?

Booze is meant to be consumed.

Keeping it on the shelf is the same as the guy who owns a Ford GT for 3 years and only has delivery miles on it.
