Is Kelly a Great Coach?

Nov 30, 2021, 11:27 AM

He’s good, but not great.

LSU hired a coach who’s 0-2 against Saban with a margin of defeat of 73-28; 0-2 against Smart; 1-3 against Clemson’s Dabo Swinney; 0-1 in home games against Cincinnati’s Luke Fickell; 3-5 against Michigan; and 0-5 in New Year’s Six-level bowl games, plus a BCS national championship.

I don’t think Saban and Smart are too worried.

No, he’s great… Do you realize the ND has the same requirements for student athletes to get into school as Vanderbilt and Stanford? What he’s been able to do with the restrictions he has in terms of athletes is nothing short of amazing, especially the level of success he’s had making the BCS Title game and CFP multiple times. You guys who don’t understand how hard it is in today’s world of CFB to compete with no restrictions let alone the ND standards is mind blowing.

Good point.
No I did not give consideration to Notre Dame‘s admission standards. Obviously LSU has no admission standards so that will help them out for sure

My opinion, those restrictions are a big reason why he is going to LSU. He will be able to recruit from a larger pool of players and probably thinking it is his best chance at winning a NC.

I mean I get it, he’s 60, accomplished all he could at ND, passed Knute Rockne as the all time wins leader there, bow he wants a natty and can bring in any players he wants.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't think the restrictions are that great. If so, than

Clemson is recruiting the same players. Check the offers of our kid's - 2/3ths+ had offers from ND.

Notre Dame does not have the same requirements as those schools. Look at the players they've given committable offers to. Last year, it was the top 7 running backs. You think all of them are that smart? That academic idea is an absurd fantasy Irish fans make up as a self-defense mechanism.

Brian Kelly is an elite college coach. LSU, for all their internal mess, is every bit an amazing job opportunity as Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State. They have no major football team in their state to compete for the numerous talent in the local recruiting pool. Easy decision.

Coach O def wasn't a great coach. Kelly is an upgrade from

ND was mired in 20 years of absolute mediocrity

Nov 30, 2021, 12:18 PM

when Kelly took over and he turned them into an elite program that's just one notch below the true title contenders. He's taken them to a BCS title game and two CFPs. Sure they got blown out by Bama twice and Clemson once in those three games, but so have many others.

What held Kelly back at ND is their admissions requirements. It's basically like trying to recruit at Stanford. I bet half the players in the SEC wouldn't have been eligible at ND. He can recruit anyone with half a brain at LSU and that state is loaded with elite talent that grows up for 18 years dreaming of playing there.

It might not work out but I think Brian Kelly + elite talent could absolutely win a title.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

LOL, they are NOT elite

Nov 30, 2021, 12:22 PM

They get smoked every time they sniff the playoffs and couldnt even beat Cincy this year. What else have they done that you deem them "elite" ?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I said they are a step down from the title contenders

Nov 30, 2021, 1:35 PM

I consider Oklahoma to be an elite program as well and they've had similar results in playoff games as ND. There's been a pretty big gap in CFB between Alabama, Clemson, and Ohio State and everyone else in recent years. Only three other programs (2014 Oregon, 2017 UGA, and 2019 LSU) have ever won a playoff game. And they were all 1-year wonders.

So if your definition of elite CFB program is just a single tier containing Alabama, Clemson, and Ohio State, you are correct that ND is not an elite program. If you expand the definition of an elite program to include others that consistently win 10 games and regularly compete for playoff spots as i have, you have to include ND under Brian Kelly. He was 54-9 in his last five seasons there with 2 CFP bids.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

yeah but thats at Cincy and Notre Dame... ND was a step up

Nov 30, 2021, 4:53 PM [ in reply to LOL, they are NOT elite ]

in recruiting but nothing like he'll be able to get at LSU. LSU has no rules when it comes to recruiting. Whereas Cincy is in a lower rated conference and ND has high level academic requirements. LSU the bar is low and winning is all that matters...ethics have no place at LSU.

You're living in a fantasy world if you equate ND's admissions requirements with athletes from Stanford. I have friends that were athletes at Notre Dame. The requirements were no different for them. Why do you think they don't do appreciably better on the Wonderlic?

Keep in mind, nd's signature win is against Wisky. Take a look at their schedule, not a murder's row.

Re: Is Kelly a Great Coach?

Nov 30, 2021, 3:06 PM

ND has won over 70 percent of their games going back to the early 1900's. I would say that's elite. There's a reason good players go there.

I understand if You're from the SE you don't get it. Ive lived in the NE and on the west coast. They re big everywhere.

My only complaint is they are not in a conference. They don't have to play a conference championship game but still want to back into the playoffs. They also have alot of flexibility in changing their schedule. So they seem to always play a school when it's on the down turn.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He's a very good coach, but he'll be a little out of place
