Smokedetector.net question

Apr 7, 2021, 10:35 AM

Ok, so the freaking smoke detector went off this AM. They have a tendency to chirp when new batteries are needed. No biggie. Well, this wasn't a chirp, but a beep. Then they ALL started beeping. After checking the house for smoke/fire, they stopped. 20 minutes later, the one starts up again, then they ALL beep.

Located the one that seems to start the mess. Replaced the battery. Solid green light. All is well. Three hours later (now), it starts back up again.

Somehow the things are wired into the house, and when one goes off, they all go off. And it's not the freaking batteries. Blew it off with a duster. What else? Suggestions?

Last time we had this we had to replace one detector.

That's kind of odd.

Apr 7, 2021, 10:44 AM

Have you tried setting the house on fire to gauge what they're doing under those circumstances?

I'm no H8n

Apr 7, 2021, 10:51 AM

but is your house on fire?

for srs - are they just smoke detectors, or do they react to CO too? that could be bad haha

Are they expired?

Apr 7, 2021, 10:55 AM

Maybe they are expired. Did you know some have expiration dates of ~7 years?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Experation dates on products makes no sense

Apr 7, 2021, 11:11 AM

I get why food would go bad. Why in the hell do car seats "expire" every 10 years? What changes after 10 years that makes them unsafe?

Same with smoke detectors.

Interesting. I'm actually having to think

Apr 7, 2021, 11:32 AM

Between the low battery chirps and getting lucky.....it's a tough call.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgringofhonor-tiggity-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

How old are your batteries? You test one first?

Apr 7, 2021, 11:25 AM [ in reply to Dunno but I'm about to say fuggit and buy all new ones ]

Swallow one hole and after you poop take a pregnancy test. If it comes out positive the battery should be fully charged.

Change the battery in each one...

Apr 7, 2021, 10:56 AM

Ill send you a consulting invoice later today...

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I highly recommend doing this once a year. Hate the chrip

Apr 7, 2021, 11:09 AM

and the chirp seems to move from one to another.

If you change batteries once a year, you know chirp means replace the unit.

replace them all if over 7 yrs old or you don't have

Apr 7, 2021, 11:15 AM

carbon monoxide detectors. There's a new standard out, to be required by next June.

Had this same issue. Is the one causing them to go off

Apr 7, 2021, 11:34 AM

mounted on a wall or ceiling? It was dust buildup that did us in.

But seriously just replace them all.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Is it chirping every 30 or 60 sec?

Apr 7, 2021, 12:24 PM

Could be several things.
Wire is not connected.
Alarm is expired, date should be on back.
Using a battery which is not compatible.
You can reset alarm by disconnecting alarm and removing battery. Then hold the test button down for 30 sec. If that doesn't work replace them.

I'm at Disney, luckily i checked here to give pertinent info.
