Is it a fear of being left behind? Does conference alignment

Jul 1, 2022, 7:50 AM

Dictate football success?

I am not sure I understand the hand wringing going on about the conference deals…yes - if we were in the SEC, we would have more $ to spend. But spend on what?? And for what? Do those dollars mean that we will be more successful in football?

I know it’s not the same as NIL, but Clemson cannot compete with other schools with larger fan bases and money, but if this years recruiting start is any indication, it’s the wins and losses on the field, the assistant coaches (holding my breath on CJ), and especially Dabo that make more of a difference than how many holograms of tigers we can project in differing colors on the stadium using a super expensive space-age doo-hickey that we don’t really need. Heck, the athletic program can’t spend money fast enough right now on all sorts of projects that don’t directly affect recruiting or performance on the field…(no I am not talking about memorial stadium work).

Maybe it’s a fear of being left out of a national championship between sec and b1g twenty team conferences when they make the rules and shun the ncaa. That still seems like a stretch to me.

I think success on the field (if that’s the main worry a and it should be because it dictates ALOT) is a function of coaching, blocking, and tackling. Spurrier, Snyder, Bowden, Beamer, and others won big at places where there were no resources (talking about spurrier at duke), while a litany of average coaches can’t break little brother out of little brother status.

I like money too, but the end goal is winning and winning big, and we seem to be doing that and seem to be continuing on this ride we’ve been on for almost ten years now.

So my question….what are we worried about?

It just seems many are worried about

talking heads saying other conferences top our conference but you're right, it doesn't mean much at all.

The conference vs conference scenarios were created by the media to increase ratings, and it has worked. How many now tune in just to pull against SEC teams or for ACC teams.

Conference realignment, or lack of, has already had some

Jul 1, 2022, 8:00 AM

serious financial implications. Every year, we as a "football school", have to overcome a Tens of millions of dollars deficit to the SEC, and now also to the BIG schools. Those dollars translate into spending on facilities and /or coaches, and with NIL, even indirectly on players. The "Arms Race" in college football is a real, tangible thing, and we are running a three legged sack race while the two major conferences have track sprinters.

To answer your question "worried about" I am not worried about any part of college football. Why? Because I have zero control over what happens. So, I do not worry about things I cannot control. What happens, will happen. Then, I will deal with the change. Hopefully what happens will be best for Clemson Students and their opportunity for educational success. Football is a game where only a few folks can play and even less can make a ton of money. All others must work for a living. So, what happens "happens." Go Tigers

Conference unity is all about pushing more mandates they say 'unified us' albeit further deteriorates the actual benefits for more but at same time demands more money for broadcasts arbitration.

The coaching that you talk about will eventually be gone because other schools will be able to pay five times more than us. So there's that. And recruiting will eventually slip because of the sub-par coaches and a terrible schedule against Duke, Wake, BC, Syracuse, etc. Those teams will be even worse in a crappy ACC. All of that extra money also goes to baseball and basketball. Again, we'll be left behind in facilities for both of those sports. The athletic department in general will suffer greatly compared to these other conferences. Look at what the SEC is able to spend on baseball now. Look at what they are able to pay basketball coaches. You should get your head out of the sand. I bet our leaders completely disagree with everything you are saying...or at least I pray they do.

Bingo. Getting those good assistants and coaches hired away is a big cause for concern. The junior leauge ACC will only be a testing ground for future B1G and SEC coaches.

perfect summary

Perfect summary of issue. It will affect all other sports as much as anything. And when SEC schools are drawing 75 million a year they can come an offer Nick Eason millions to move back to the SEC. WE cant compete in the long term making $40 million (or more) less per YEAR than the SEC and Big Ten. Ask those small market baseball teams how that works.

You need to stick to the 05, book reading, and wine sipping. There's a reason Clemson isn't getting top 10 players like we used to....NIL money. And the ACC is going to wither away while the big boy conferences take in all the money. Clemson should have jumped to the SEC many years back, but instead we chose to stay in the Pee Wee league and play the wine and cheese crowd across the border. Keep thinking we'll be fine in the ACC, while the SEC gets stronger and stronger.

Clemson has more support than you realize. That's why Clemson is kicking ### in recruiting this year.

I'm not sure what all this concern is about hitting an iceberg. Sure, I like arriving at my destination on time, but this is just a short delay. We seem to be doing just fine here on the Titanic. Hell, an iceberg is really just water and we've been in water since we left port. Go ahead and scramble into you fancy, futuristic "life boats". Me? I am sticking with the captain and crew and not doing a #### thing different. Besides, the Buggy Whip Manufacturers Association sent me a telegram before we left and assured me this boat was unsinkable and the strongest boat ever made! Now, if you will excuse me, I am going back to applying Brylcream to my hair, rearranging the deck chairs and listening to the band play.

I have no fear or worry about college sports as it is merely a hobby or past time.

I fear the type of country we are leaving my grandson and worry about his future.

It makes me sad that the two big conferences are so power hungry that they are destroying the things about college football which makes it great. CFB for many is not just about the top teams. It is also about local and regional rivalries. Its about the hate between Pitt and WVA or UVA and VT. Its about the passion of the Army/Navy game. Its about a little boy in North Carolina following the ACC standings knowing something about every team.

The problem with payouts is it takes money to be competitive. The big boys will have nicer facilities and can pay more to the best coaches. They will get even more tv coverage which will be slanted in their favor. If we want to be a G5 level team with WF and BC then there is no problem. But if we want to compete for National Championships there is no alternative to ditching the ACC and joining a power conference assuming they want us.
