Hunter Johnson

Aug 12, 2016, 2:41 PM

Enrolling early is HUGE!! Don't be surprised if he starts the 2017 opener.

Would be nice to have a player of his caliber ready if something were to happen to DW.

Does this mean these four count in 2016 scholarship numbers? Been trying to figure out how many 2017 scholarships are available.

Re: Hunter Johnson

Aug 12, 2016, 3:39 PM

I am pretty sure they will count towards 17, this does not bind them to CU like the letter of intent does for the school. You can sign multiple financial aid agreements.

Aug 13, 2016, 9:07 AM [ in reply to Re: Hunter Johnson ]

I believe those that enroll in January can be counted back to 2016 or forward to 2017; it is up to coaches. It really does not matter for Clemson this year because we are up against the 85 scholarship limit.

Our 2017 Class size will be smaller because we are limited to sign as many as leave after this season due to completing 4 years of eligibility (5 years to play 4), leave early for NFL, transfer, medical hardship, dismissed from team or simply quit.

I have read that we expect to sign 16-18, but that number may increase as we get closer to signing day. For instance, I don't think our coaches expected Green to go pro this time last year nor did they expect to Gibson to transfer or Chalmers to be dismissed.

Tigernet has our Football Roster broken down by year and position if you click on the Football Tab and select scholarships. It does not have some of the position changes from the Fall, but it is a great tool that shows just how talented and young at just about every position we are right now!

3 QB's from Current Roster Back in 2017?

Aug 13, 2016, 10:54 AM

Bryant, Cooper, and James Barnes.

Does Tucker Israel stay and compete or transfer? He may surprise us this year if he's healthy.

If he transfers, that leaves us Bryant, Cooper, Barnes, Johnson, and Brice, which means we'd have 3 ready to play next August.

So what is the deal with people think Zerrick Cooper is a nobody? He might as well just leave huh it's Hunters job lol. Cooper or Bryant will be our QB in 17.

Re: Hunter Johnson

Aug 12, 2016, 3:42 PM

I think our QB situation will be interesting for the next couple of years. I think Johnson will start at some point in his freshmen year. If we get Trevor who knows what will happen with our quarterbacks in the future other than the fact we will be in great hands with whom ever plays the position.

I think Hunter will be the most talented QB on our roster in 2017. Look what he does with a horrible offensive line.

Aug 12, 2016, 4:23 PM

Thank you. While I hope Hunter is amazing I believe he will be 3rd string his freshman year. Zerrick is amazing and will fit our O perfect. If KB can become more consistent in passing he will start.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

KB probably won't even finish his Clemson career at QB

Aug 12, 2016, 4:36 PM

although I'm not really sure what position he would switch to. His situation reminds me a bit of Chansi Stuckey's but, unlike then, we are absolutely loaded at WR now.

Johnson is going to be the most talented QB on the roster when he gets here. I seriously doubt he starts the opener but i expect that he will be the 2nd team QB by the end of fall camp and maybe pushing Cooper for playing time as the year goes along. We will see.

So he starters 2019 a seasoned cooper or a sophomore in Johnson?

I hate to agree with you, but...

Aug 13, 2016, 8:17 AM [ in reply to KB probably won't even finish his Clemson career at QB ]

If Bryant hasn't CLEARLY passed Nick on the depth chart by now, he's got some some serious issues. I like him, he's crazy athletic, great running QB, but several of his long passes in the spring game were just awful. It just didn't look like he's "getting it" when it comes to the passing dimension of our offense. Again, I like him - local boy, highly-touted coming out of high school... but with the guys we got coming in his window is closing fast. He needs to start making up a lot of ground soon. I'm pulling for him. I'd rather Cooper have a year in the system before we ask him to be another Deshaun. Thoughts?

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Too early to count out KB

Aug 13, 2016, 9:46 AM

He's technically a RS freshman.

My money is still on him.

you seem to know your stuff. That said, I just I don't have faith in Bryant as a qb utilizing our weapons. I guess we will know this season. I hope you are correct.

Re: I hate to agree with you, but...

Aug 13, 2016, 10:01 AM [ in reply to I hate to agree with you, but... ]

Yep, he's easily the best runner of the group, but he just doesn't have the arm + decision-making/poise to be the guy. Once Cooper and Johnson absorb the playbook and get comfortable, Bryant may be looking at a position change/transfer.

zero chance he will be 3rd string.

Hunter Johnson will be the Best QB on Campus after DW leaves.
Johnson will not redshirt .

Re: Hunter Johnson

Aug 12, 2016, 4:22 PM

I disagree. I believe Zerrick Cooper is the better athlete and has a stronger arm. Kelly Bryant could make it happen as well. It will come down to who knows the play book better seeing that Hunter has a great arm and is athletic as well. A year more for Cooper and 2 years more for Bryant.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

100% on who has grasp of offense. Not enough

Aug 12, 2016, 6:56 PM

Difference between Cooper and Johnson athletically but Johnson's swag reminds me of Deshawn. Confidence can carry inexperience and talent is all over the field.

KB is a phenomenal athlete and I hope he finds a home. Not sure QB is it with the talent on campus and coming.

Re: 100% on who has grasp of offense. Not enough

I believe Cooper will beat KB out but possible not. We will see. I think Cooper can lead us to championships and hopefully Johnson when Cooper leaves. We will find out tho.

Johnson will hands down be the best QB the minute he walks on campus. Does that mean he will start in 2017 for sure? No. If he grasps the playbook quickly and learns the offense he'll have a good chance though. Either way, no chance Johnson redshirts in 2017.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

BS... Not with Zerrick Cooper on campus.***

Re: Chase Brice might even start one day.

Aug 13, 2016, 7:20 AM

WOrse case scenario, I have faith in Bryant and Cooper to carry the torch. Both of these guys are talents. I think you see a LOT of Bryant in games 2 and 3, and not just handing the ball off or running the ball. They HAVE to get him throwing.

badge-donor-05yr.jpgmilitary_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Chase Brice might even start one day.

Aug 13, 2016, 8:23 AM

The crazy and great thing about all this is Brice could be a starter but could never see the field in his career at CU. Heck if Trevor comes Johnson may never see the field. Who would have ever thought we could have this many great qb's on one team. I know this all depends on them all living up to their reputation.

Well if we can extrapolate from a single data point

Aug 13, 2016, 8:44 AM

DW didn't start until midway through his freshman year and he was a backup to CS. Coaches brought him along at a safe pace and didn't immediately throw him to the wolves before they knew he could handle the pressure. Heck, he may not have started at all that season if the offense has been clicking without him. I would be surprised if the coaches didn't take the same approach in 2017 with the overall upgrade of QB talent already on the team.
