Is Clemson a blue blood program now?

I guess you have to define what a "blue blood" is. Kind of a vague concept anyway. Lets judge it by Winsipedia's all time program rankings. We are 13th by the way. They use a bunch of different metrics to arrive at these rankings. Is 13th all time blue blood? Maybe its top 10? Top 5? Some pretty historic programs in our ranking range.

We're gaining on some of them, but we've still got a ways to go. Go Tigers!!! Beat Carolina!!!

Being a blue blood is not about a recent winning streak. Its old money not new money. If you asked a hundred random fans who are the top 10 historically great football programs how many would mention Clemson? Yes we are top tier based on the past 10 years but based on the past 50 years?

You think we got to top 13 just on the last 10 years alone?

Not so. Clemson has historically been a upper tier football program. Unfortunately we wandered in the desert for ~20 years in the 90s and early 2000s or just imagine where we would be in these rankings. I completely disagree on the assertion that Clemson has only been relevant the past decade, although I do understand why people think that way.

Also the 60s…..even though that was some of my favorite teams and years. Worse decade in Clemson football.

We are historically a top 15-20 program but the true blue bloods are top 8ish. They have multiple NCs, Heisman winners, legandary coaches and large fan bases. USC, Texas, Oklahoma, ND, UM, Ohio St and maybe a couple more.

Multiple NCs? Check
Heisman Winner - No
Legendary Coaches - John Heisman ring a bell? What about Dabo? He'll be eventually.
Large fan base - debatable, although we do have one of the largest stadiums (15th I think).

This is true. 30-40 years ago most people outside the Southeast didn’t even know where Clemson was. People would say things like “oh yea, the Clemson Tide”. IMO we can claim elite status in the modern era for the last say 10-15 years but there are a lot of teams that have more longevity on the national stage.

Lets be real, people still dont know where Clemson is

Most people cant even pronounce it correctly. That said, Our first national title was over 40 years ago now....crap Im old. We had successes prior to even despite no titles. We had one of the sports most recognized name coach here despite having never won the trophy named after him.
I would agree we are not there yet, but most certainly knocking on the door.
I think this ties in to folks not wanting us to start slipping, which is what creates all the "fretting" over things not going quite as smoothly as they did prior to the 2020 season.

Good analogy with old vs new money

Don’t think Clemson has made it to “old money” status which makes me think of S.Cal, Michigan & Oklahoma etc. However, we are past what is “new money” which makes me think of “.dot com” guys who are a flash in the pan & usually unstable. The Tigers are definitely a solid, steady investment for the long term prospectus. ???

I don't think Clemson is a blue blood program - and maybe that's a good thing - let's stay hungry to spill other's blue blood.
