Interesting tibdit about FSU's Phil Cofer

Feb 4, 2015, 11:34 PM

He is the nephew of James Cofer who, along with Terry Minor, set Clemson up for our NCAA run in back in 1982. They both signed letters of intent to play for Clemson but did not qualify. Clemson tried to place them but they asked to be released from their LOI's so that they could go to Tennessee (who apparently had no problems getting them admitted). When we refused to let them out of their commitments, they wrote letters to the ACC office outlining violations on our part in detail. It snowballed from there and we ended up on three years of probation - two from the NCAA and an extra year from our own conference.

And that's how the whole thing got started.

He was committed to go play at Tennessee until U.T. changed coaches.

We got three years because of that?

Holy hell.

That MIGHT be a slight scholarship reduction or something of the sort these days

There was more to it than that

But it was their letters that opened the investigation.

We weren't doing anything that the entire SEC wasn't doing. We were just newer at it and not as good at covering our tracks. I am certain that Tennessee set us up by getting them to write the letters in the first place figuring they would eliminate a pesky upstart who was causing them to pay more to get players.
