Interesting Daniel Rodriguez Info

Aug 13, 2016, 4:46 PM

Many folks have read DRod's book and it tells a great story, but while reading Red Platoon by Clinton Romesha, Medal of Honor winner from the same fight at COP Keating as DRod there are numerous mentions of DRod's actions.

Long story short, Romesha describes multiple accounts of DRod's heroism and total disregard for his own safety in that 14 hour fight against incredible odds. Made and awesome read even better to hear a CMH winner describe DRod as a hero.

Just a minor correction to your original post.... Clinton Romesha is a Medal of Honor Recipient - not a Medal of Honor winner. This is an unfortunate, but common mis-phrasing for those that have been awarded the Medal of Honor.

Not trying to be the word police, but to us vets and active duty types this is an important distinction. Military medals are awarded by the United States Government to recipients who earned them through exceptional service - not won them in some kind of competition.

By regulation and as noted on DA Form 638, the official term for one nominated and then subsequently receiving (the origin of recipient) is AWARDEE. Having written up awards for valor for a number of soldiers, I like the term winner as these folks are not just custodians or receivers they truly are winners.

I think a combination of their modesty, reverence for their comrades who did not come back and modern society's unwillingness to glorify killing have contributed to watering-down calling these men and women recipients instead of winners, champions, heroes and icons. In my eyes, I still by design, like to call them winners. I know the price they have paid certainly earns them them a courtesy.

Sorry for the rant, "recipient" is one of my triggers :)
