Interesting conundrum with T. Lawrence

Jan 28, 2017, 10:21 PM

Let me just start by saying I hope I'm not the only one who has mixed feelings somewhere in between beikg really excited over his early commitment to us and cautioisly optimistic over how he's going to fit in to the QB situation. Stick with me on this. Here's what I mean:

If this next season ends up being a pretty average one- let's say we win 9-10 games- and the QB play isn't spectacular from whoever wins the starting battle (at this point, I'm thinking either H. Johnson or Z. Cooper emerge...sorry I just don't see K. Bryant, T. Israel, or C. Brice getting it) then I'm thinking T. Lawrence stays committed and comes in working hard with an eye on grabbing the starting spot. But what if we have a pretty decent season and H. Johnson or Z. Cooper play really well but not like in a runaway, dominant way like DW4, then I'm nervous that, at that point, T. Lawrence could see that situation and think we're doing just fine and that there isn't a dire need for his services at the QB position and move on to his backup choice which is Georgia.

Here's why this is just so unsettling to me: they are just so many recruiting experts, high school coaches, and even 5 star players from the past few years- especially those coming out of the Georgia high school football regions- that have been saying that the kid is pretty much the tall, skinny, white version of the second coming of DW4. He really is the real deal. Don't get me wrong, Z. Cooper is ridiculously talented. And H. Johnson has the arm talent, foot speed, leadership abilities, and other intangibles you want in a QB. But none of the recent keep your prospects sense DW4 have come out as highly touted and talked about at ever level as T. Lawrence has. I guess I would really just hate to have a somewhat decent year this next year, but not a great one, and then miss on this kid and see him go to another program, dominate, and end up ha omg a DW4 impact. What say ye, TNET?

He is Clemson bound. Period.

DW4 wasnt a concensus 5 star recruit coming out of high school first of all.

Secondly, I don't think TL cares whether or not we in good hands at the QB position or not.

None of this made any sense to be honest.

We can't sit around worrying too much about an embarrassment of riches at the most important position.

Any way you look at it, we are the envy of the college football world.

My personal hope is that Cooper, or Johnson is good enough to keep Trevor Lawrence on the bench as a freshman and that Lawrence is enough of a competitor to embrace the challenge.

Agreed. While I though the other guys all look good, going back to film of his Freshman year, he is clearly special. As in once per decade at least special. Who knows, could get to college and be a total bust, but it isn't from lack of having ALL the tools.

Let me answer your pist like this. I don't care if we trot out Pyet on Manning 2.0, Jimmy Green Beans, or an O Lineman to play QB if we win our games. Hey, I want the kid, ALOT, but if he passes, and We STILL win, then we Will get another good QB. They will come if you are winning and also a QB friendly system. And lasty, I get where you are coming from, but 9-10 wins being called average is hardly an average season. Best is standard, but if it is an outlier due to injuries, bead breaks, etc, I can most certainly live with one 9-10 win season every decade or so :)

Redshirting Lawrence would be ideal

Re: Interesting conundrum with T. Lawrence

Jan 28, 2017, 11:20 PM

There's really no other possible way...what's ideal for me is Johnson wins the job this coming season...18' season redshirt Lawrence giving him at least 3 years to play...anything other than Johnson starting next year will cause a log jam and an inevitable transfer.

I really am suprised we have not had any transfers thus far, and would not be suprised to see some after spring ball this year. Frankly as good as we all expet Cooper to be, and with Johnson and Bryce coming in, that could leave Bryant and Israel on the outside looking in. Bryant I just don't know, but darn, I love the way Israel slings it, and I know he could be a starter on some level. Just my .02 cents.

I don't think it's ever a bad idea to RS a kid if he isn't starter material that season. If he comes in day one and Is head and shoulders the man, give him the ball. If he's in a dogfight all camp to be the starter, make him #2 and give him reps.. but if he's not at least close, let him percolate, learn like Cooper has done, get his school stuff going, and then knock it out of the park his RS freshman season.

Haha Lawrence isn't redshirting, he's a once in a generation player. No matter how well the starter does next year, he will split time with Lawrence in 2018, and Lawrence will be the outright starter in 2019. Anything less than an amazing season from the starter next year, and Lawrence will be our starter in 2018.

Jan 28, 2017, 11:28 PM

out at this point. Nobody knows how good any of these guys will be when they get their chance or how ready they will be when they get here. It's all speculation. You can get some idea from the video clips we all see, as well as the star ratings, but it's impossible to project how any of these talented QBs will pan out, much less which ones will start or which ones may or may not finish their college careers at Clemson.

At this stage, take comfort in knowing that we are attracting elite talent all over the field and developing that talent as good or better than anybody, QB included.

Re: Interesting conundrum with T. Lawrence

Jan 28, 2017, 11:35 PM

What is likely is Johnson wins the job and get lawrence on campus then if he wins it, great but if he doesn't then give him a redshirt. If Johnson is great he'll leave early and Lawrence starts as a redshirt sophomore. Then he lights it up he can leave as a redshirt sophomore and still enter the league on schedule. Or he could stick around and increase his stock if need be He really wouldn't lose anything. It's really no big deal when you look at the big picture and not just who's on the field and who's on the bench. We're in great shape.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Just to be safe, let's not play a QB at all in 2017. Wildcat all the time.

Jan 28, 2017, 11:46 PM

That way we won't risk having a great QB this year, and thus risk losing a player who has never proven anything on the collegiate level.

The whole offense could be double passes, reverse passes, quadruple option flea flickers, flying v, punt on first down, using rocket propelled skate shoes, lighting each other aflame with kerosine soaked jerseys, infesting the field with deadly australian fire ants, replacing the water coolers with biscuits n gravy, kickoffs at 4 AM. The opportunities are endless.
