Interesting Comparison of our D by Alabama fans....

Nov 15, 2018, 7:54 AM

Here's the link:

https://www.tidefans.com/forums/showthread.php?t=304940&page=3

This forum is usually a really good read and it is interesting to see how closely the Tide fans follow teams all around the country. You see far less SEC homerism on this site than you would on most other SEC sites (ahem, FGF).

But this particular thread stood out to me for how many of their fans don't think our defense is very good. Particularly, they seem to have short memories of how they won the game last year and their performance versus our defense.

Most Clemson fans remember the score being 10-6 in the third with neither team's offense doing jack squat until consecutive INTs (one a pick six) by Bryant effectively ended the game. Alabama punted six times in the game, had 16 first downs, and 281 total yards. They averaged 3.4 yards per rush and 5.0 yards per pass.

Now, if our offense had shown a pulse, Saban would have played Tua, and the game likely would have gotten worse for Clemson pretty quickly. But of the three games against Bama, our defense had--by far--its best game in the last one.

In the Tampa game, Bama also had 16 first downs, but amassed 376 yards and averaged 6.5 yards per rush.

In the Phoenix game, Bama had 18 first downs and 473 total yards. Only 3.0 yards per rush, but 13.4 yards per pass.

See a trend?

Side note--on the Bama forum, I find it interesting that the poster who is most skeptical of Clemson's defense has an Ohio State logo as his avatar.

I hope the Bama team is underestimating our D as well. It will be really bad for them if they do.

What Bama fans fail to realize is our 2s and 3s would start for the magority of SEC teams.

There are many, many instances over the past 8 years of opposing fans thinking more highly of Clemson AFTER having played them than before.

I expect the same to happen again this year on both Dec. 29 and Jan. 7

I hope every team we play underestimates our guys. People fail to mention on there that we have been playing EVERYONE on the team, throughout the entirety and not just in mop duty. I hope everyone enjoys every second of this season, because its going to be another memorable one!

Yup. Our defensive stats are a little bit misleading because of the amount of reserves we have played this year. More than ever I would say. If our secondary comes to play this is possibly our best defense ever.

Michigan has NOT been tested and they won't. NDs offense was sputtering with Brandon Wimbush when they faced off.

Not worried about what Bama fans think although they *tend* to be better informed than some of their knuckle-dragging counter(coots)parts.

That being said, I kinda want to see what the D can actually do with four focused quarters against a talented offense. Outside of a better-than-expected Cusemand a 3/4th push by A&M, they have not really been pushed. A&M was a bit early/rusty and those first few games normally tells us about the coaches off-season prep than how the team will perform after a few games. I was more impressed with Jimbo after than game than anything. 'Cuse was a bit more interesting because the D basically shut the 'Cuse down after halftime (turnover cause the 2nd TD). Cuse did not have a drive of more than 5 plays in the second. We have only given up one first-half "offensive" TD linked to a sustained drive (not linked to turnover or short field position/special teams issue) all year (Cuse) and the only other 1st half TDs were linked to a interception (GT) and kick-return (BC).

Now Bama's D is extremely good but also compare they they give up Touchdowns in the 1st/2nd. (Old miss, A&M, Arky, Mizzu, UT). All early TDs.

If you look at their defensive dominance, it is the inverse of ours. They give up points in the first and then shut folks down compared to us using the band as our secondary in the 3rd. By the time that Bama gets dominant on DC, the offense has already closed-out the game against non-explosive SEC offense schemes.

Interesting stuff

Reading through its obvious there are a lot of Big 10, and more specifically Michigan people lurking. The funniest thing I saw was the post stating our defense was "much better last year".
The Bama fans I have encountered seem confident that they will walk to the title with little resistance. I make SURE to let them know that deep down they KNOW Clemson is NOT who they want to face. They know we match up and they know we can play with them and beat them.
