Located just two hours from Atlanta, Georgia, this growing college town is still an affordable spot to retire. Median home selling price is currently about $180,000, but naturally pricing varies by neighborhood. The west side of town is close to the college — home to the famous Clemson Tigers football team — so it's both a livelier and louder part of town during the school year. Clemson is considered to be very friendly to newcomers and offers plenty of continued learning opportunities and a good tax base for retirees.

send the great unwashed masses of Ohioans out to California to pitch their retirement tent....everybody's moving away from there anyhow.....:~)
(and at the rate Atlanta's growing, is Clemson STILL 2 hours from Peachtree St??)

Inexpensive, and the average home is $160.00?? You can't be serious! This has to be some kind of joke. Do you have any possible grasp of where the average American is currently living? Maybe you re from Hollywood, and live in that netherworld of drugs, inflated salaries, inflated egos, and non-existant morals.

a hard decision about that, so have looked at it. We live in Greenville, close enough to downtown to call it "steps away" in Realtor lingo. We likely could not sell here and buy in Clemson a comparable place for comparable price. Most of the near downtown construction in Clemson is oriented to either student or ballgame needs, and that price is not cheap. Not much above that is available, and if so is very expensive. If somewhere in Pickens County is considered Clemson, or if you want to sell a 1200 sq ft place and buy a 700 sq ft place, the article might be right. Otherwise, not really.

Do you have a good idea of prices for houses in Greenville? Believe me prices are really rising and there's a shortage of houses on the market in Greenville. It's a good time to sell.

I agree. It's sad. I own three properties in the Clemson area, and one at the beach,including my home, and it's still sad. The lower-income people just get cut out, which benefits people like me. However, I still did work very hard for what little bit I have. Slaved in order to get my education, lived in various dumps, Ate a lot of very basic foods (i.e. bens and franks). But, I did have the benefit of high-achieving parents. Without that, not sure how I would have turned out to be anything. Just thinking aloud. "He come out from the bar with a scattergun and......."

Well wow, I stand corrected. That is amazing. Hard to understand how local salaries support this, unless it is Yankees coming down with huge buyouts from their previous homes. A bit sad to me, even though my own home is apparently worth much more than I originally paid for it. But then if I sold, how would I buy anything else. Fortunately, I do own three other properties into which I could move, but what about those people who have been less fortunate than I?

but it's looking more like it might be Litchfield By the Sea to be with family. I would really enjoy living in Clemson though. I have always thought I'd move back there someday, but it just never happened.

I love Clemson, but Litchfield would be great. At least you’re not stuck in Ohio.
