Inevitable. NCAA is a dinosaur a day after the meteor strike

(4) 16-team “super conferences” whose champions have first-round byes to the playoffs. The math works best if you have 8 at-large invitees who play each other in the first round. Second round goes to 4 left. Third round leaves 2. 4 weeks required for that scenario.
I think they will have to shorten the regular season to 10or 11(max) regular season games to accommodate the playoffs. Should play an 8-game game conference schedule with 2 non-conference games, but only 1 with a lower-division opponent. It is important to doing your best to limit football to September-early January. For the time being, student athletes need to be alllowed to do the bulk of their academic hours in the “offseason”

I’ve been saying almost exactly this for almost 20 years to anyone unfortunate enough to bring up BCS/CFP/College football championships. Add a relegation system with the the remnants of the P5 who don’t make it and the FCS and you have a system that people would actually be vested in. The problem with the emerging model is that no one is going to actually watch. Ratings are already in decline for the CFP. Make it so that only the BIG 10 and SEC have a shot and everyone tunes out.

So much for worrying about conference affiliation***

Not at all surprising...

The NCAA is a corrupt toothless organization that has, for a long time, selectively enforced its own rules and regulations. Now-a-days, they are too scared to actually do anything out of fear of being sued and having to spend millions in legal costs.

Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.
