In the end, only 1 thing matters.

Whether we play in the Big XII in 2013 or in the ACC, the ultimate goal of the Clemson football program will be to win a national championship. I've been playing out various scenarios in my mind of how conference realignment could eventually shake out, and in the end, I don't think it will matter unless we win.

- If the BOT holds true to their word and we remain in the ACC, there is a legitimate argument to be made that we could be left out of a 4 team playoff because of our SOS. Combined with Swoffie's new 9 game ACC schedule, this will force Clemson to schedule tougher and better out of conference games in order to raise our SOS to a competitive level. Say goodbye to fluff games and say hello to better matchups against SEC, B1G, and BigXII teams. This holds doubly true if Clemson stays put and the rest of the ACC does get poached (losing our tougher opponents like FSU, Miami, VT, or GT).

- If we do jump ship to the BigXII, we will immediately begin playing harder teams and our SOS will be tougher than it has been in recent history. Most road games will be further from home, in stadiums with rabid fans (when compared to the girls in Durham or College Park). We still will play USuC every season, and there is a good chance we will continue to schedule some other SEC matchups (Auburn, UGA, etc.). Life is going to be far from comfortable in the BigXII.

In both scenarios, and other variations, things will be difficult. The only way we have a chance to compete in a playoff would be to go undefeated (possibly 12-1) with a competitive SOS. When it comes down to the nuts and bolts, we have to win, and win against the big boys- no matter our conference affiliation. The BigXII will provide an easier road to setting up those big games, but staying in the ACC wouldn't necessarily block us from similar opportunities if we can schedule non-conference opponents that carry some weight.

In the end, we need to focus on winning. We HAVE to beat the chickens, we HAVE to win on national stages (chickfila kickoff, Orange bowl...), and we HAVE to keep our players from missing game time due to academic/rules violations. We need to worry about our team and less about whose conference flag we are flying. If we can't win 12 games, it really won't matter.

I see exactly the opposite

I see the ACC teams abandoning their tough OOC matchups and going to strictly cupcake teams (except where it can't be avoided, like rivalries), so that there's no way to accurately gauge how good the conference is against out-of-league competition. That'll pad the records of the top-tier ACC teams and start to make us look better both to the outside world and to recruits. The SEC has mastered this strategy.

I also hope the football schedulers get smart and do what the SEC has done, which is to make the weeks before a pre-rivalry game as easy as humanly possible: lots of home games, a cupcake or idle week before the big archrivalry OOC game. However, knowing who's in charge in the ACC front offices, I hold little confidence this will ever happen.

The problem with the tough ooc teams is that they will want a home and home. The cupcakes are happy to come to our place and get cut a check. Since the cupcakes always come to us, we keep most of the money. That money pays for the non revenue sports (of which there seems to be no limit).

Money seems to keep coming up over and over and over.

We really don't know just yet how much a role SOS will

play. If the formula for determining the top 4 for a playoff remains exactly as it has been for the BCS, our SOS won't keep us from a playoff as long as we win. The polls are not going away. Therefore, the polls are the most important factors in the equation. Just like last year, if we win, we'll be in the mix. Simple as that.

Now, if the BCS completely rewrites the formula, all bets are off. My guess is, however, the formula will remain exactly as is and the only argument will he how many teams and where the playoffs will be held.
