In the end, it is really not about who broadcasts this or

that but what kind of product is put out there on gameday and who can listen to it. Now way back in the late 70's and early 80's Clemson was at the forefront of the most extensive and best produced radio shows out there for football -- starting with the Tiger Tailgate Show, followed by the football game broadcast and wrap up, and then followed by the 5th quarter. And Clemson covered the entire state from the mountains to the coast. From Rock Hill to Beaufort and from Florence to Aiken. You could always find a station on the air.

The Tailgate Show was creative and was one of the best products out there for its time with music, analysis, and on-air skits that were perfect for Clemson tailgating Saturday mornings. It lost its punch when it moved under the Learfield Sports brand some time ago. The 5th quarter was/is also a great product. I remember listening to it on the long 3 1/2 hour drives back to Allendale County after Clemson games in the 70's and 80's.

If Clemson wants to brand and put the best product on the air then it is about the program itself and access. I have no doubt Munson will do a fine job, but what does it say about Clemson football when you can't even find a radio station to pick it up on these days in some part of our state? I know -- the internet and all that -- but still--it used to be standard to turn the radio dial and find a Tiger broadcast.

What does it say about Clemson football if programming decisions are made in Missouri and the creativity and fun of the Tiger Tailgate show is just a distant memory? Lots to ponder on that. We need someone with direction to once again make our entire broadcast on football Saturdays the jewel and standard bearer for Southeastern football broadcasts.

GO Tigers!!!!!!!!!!

This was too sirius.

Well said AThomas! If you compare our overall media package,

including the Tiger Tailgate Show, game broadcasts, 5th Quarter Show, and coach's show, it PALES in comparison to what we had back in the 80's with Russ Cassell, Jane Robelot, Joe Erwin, and Jim Phillips.

However, Pete has done a fine job as PBP guy, but you just can't replace a Jim Phillips. I honestly haven't listened to the Tiger Tailgate Show in years since they started playing those stoopid songs. Maybe it's better now.

Oh, and let add--we used to do it right at EVERY away game.

Our broadcast crew was on the road with Tiger fans all over the place who stopped by and created a heck of a lot of spirit in places all over the Southeast.

Our away game show was not broadcast from some bar in Greenville where half the people didn't even know a game was being played or who were Coots but it was a visible and an important landmark for Clemson fans who were following their team. They stopped by, chatted, and created instant Clemson spirit all around the broadcast. I miss that.

They can take those off broadcasts from Greenville and what not and just do away with them. They do nothing for Tiger football on the road.

I agree 100%.

I don't give a rat's @$$ who is doing the broadcast. I live in New Ellenton, SC and I can't get it on the radio. Fix that!

Why don't ewe move back to civilization?

New Ellenton is a small town, no doubt.

but I am 10 minutes from Aiken, SC, and 15 minutes from Augusta, GA. Far from the boonies in terms of radio broadcasting zones. I don't have a problem getting Todd Ellis's annoying voice over the airwaves, but they took Clemson sports off of the FM channel that it used to be on 3 or 4 years ago.

That needs to be fixed all over our state. We need to

compete again for air-time with the Coots. It is a sad state that all can not just turn a dial and listen to Tiger football.

The Tiger Tailgate Show hasn't been the same....

May 1, 2014, 12:17 PM

since the days of Russ Cassell, Allison Dalton, Jane Robelot and Joe Erwin (no offense to Scott Rhymer and Roy Philpot). At one time it was the largest and most successful show of its kind anywhere in the country.
