Best Concert band pt2

Jan 26, 2022, 5:15 PM

In the middle 60's Beatles took over American music. They took it over.
One artist who was unaffected was South Carolina's own James Brown. I bought his records, and in 1966 got to see him the first time in Greenville. I escorted my roommate's young sister on a double date.

James was not like other artists. "Eighteen-wheelers" arrived. Instead of a group, an army showed with organ and horns. James Brown was the 'King of Live'. I was at times sure that night that the walls there would collapse.
James more than earned his money.

Since I have seen all sorts of things like guys busting up guitars, but James Brown brought excitement others could not approach.

Simply put, on stage no one else was James Brown.

Here he is in later years with maybe the best vocal talent the world has known.

I have never seen that clip or knew of this. Thanks for posting , always been a big fan of James. My brother in law thought so much of him he went to his funeral!

I will second that one. I was and remain to this day a big James Brown fan. I Saw him multiple times: once in Greenville while I was a student at Clemson; Once many years later in Macon after all of our children had been born; but most often at Bell Auditorium in Augusta. Definitely the best live performance I have ever seen. No other concert I have attended comes even close. When we saw him in Macon he had lost a lot of his energy but he was still James Brown and I wanted my children to be able to say they had seen him live. I picked up my youngest, who was probably only about seven or eight, and lifted her up above the crowd to see. In May my daughter and son-in-law will finally celebrate their marriage. She selected the father daughter dance song based on her memories of us dancing in our family room from the time she was a toddler. The song she selected is "Get Up off of that thing".

At Ovens Auditorium in Charlotte saw Charlotte Church when she was 14-15 on her first tour and one of her first performances.
It ranks top 5 for me.
m
I knew she had a voice few could match, and why I was there. This level of talent seldom hit Charlotte.
Her stage presence at that young age was incredible. She walked out alone on an empty stage and talked to the huge audience as if she were talking to best friends at a pajama party -- completely amazing!
We were completely hers.

She sang some songs explaining why she chose this or that one. Then she let the audience pick one to repeat.
We picked 'Bali Ha'i'. This is a tune often done by the best as "best" is needed to do this tune.
She was hoping we would choose the Beatles, so did that again too.

Every time we hear one of Tina Turner's songs, my wife still gripes about us not going to her final concert in Greenville.

I saw the Ike & Tina Turner Revue in Littlejohn, about 1970.

Jan 26, 2022, 7:38 PM [ in reply to Re: Best Concert band pt2 ]

It was a helluva show, and in my time as a student(68-72), there were some great concerts in Littlejohn! A few memorable ones I remember were Allman Brothers twice(before Duane died), Chuck Berry, when his opening acts were Lynyrd Skynyrd and Marshall Tucker, Rod Stewart, James Gang, Jethro Tull, Deep Purple, Chicago, Three Dog Night, Wet Willie(they were great).

The James Gang's opening act was supposed to be Goose Creek Symphony, but the Goose bus broke down on the way here from Kentucky, so the James Gang(led by Joe Walsh) agreed to go ahead and play early, and let Goose Creek follow. A good thing too...I wouldn't have wanted to follow the show Goose Creek put on!

I was always amazed at the big time bands that played at Clemson during my time there!

I still enjoy occasionally going to good concerts. A few I have seen in the past two or three years are Joe Bonamassa, Paul Thorn, Tab Benoit and the Avett Brothers.

My favorite Christmas song is O Holy Night. I have searched for the best recording. So far it is Charlotte Church. If you like O Holy Night and Charlotte Church you must take a listen. By the way, since this is a Clemson Athletics site: I am looking forward to making it to a softball game or two this spring since I'm only about a half hour away. Mine is 'Carol of the Bells'. I have collected many versions of it, and still do.

I liked him a lot better than Elvis

and Brown had a much better career because he did not have to rely on ripping off other artists, he was the genuine article and a much better dancer.

better than Elvis

Jan 26, 2022, 7:40 PM

Thoughtful reply. Most don't take the time to think on the crap I post here. Many who do have no idea how clever your posts are, and have no idea you are an audiophile.

Concert music is seldom "audiophile" level.
One is not better than the other, just different. Folks who go to a concert wanting to hear a perfect rendition of a record will never be happy. That does not imply the concert version will not move you more than any record has, especially if you have a kinda drunk honey there with you.

Elvis and James are different, had a different act, but in the day, the same audience. Elvis is more 50's, but like James was 'the man" over a few decades. Sadly, I never got to see Elvis, but like most know all his tunes and movies.

ELVIS and JAMES defined music for many "in the day".
American artist near that time and on that level were few - Sinatra comes to mind who was much older but lasted.

Back in the late 90s I saw James Brown in Augusta. But not in concert. Was working a shut down at a mill and my girlfriend and I went out to eat and decided to drive through downtown to check it out. Came down a street and James Brown and Al Sharpton were inside a building and we could see through the big window - looked like a radio interview room or TV interview room visible to the sidewalk.

SO I was like wow that is James Brown....I drive around the block and slowed down to check again. By this time they had turned off the lights and were on the side walk. They had a couple of bruisers standing by. I let down the window and and my girl and I started singing "I feel good"

Ol' Al Sharpton looked like he wanted to shoot me, but James gave us the biggest smile and laugh and started dancing.....we made one more trip around the block and waved.

just one of those chance things that happen.....

Best at the Field House

Jan 26, 2022, 8:05 PM

Best concert I have seen at Clemson was Dave Brubeck, Paul Desmond, Joe Morello, and Eugene Wright.
Actually that ranks in my top five of all time.

Best concert I attended at Clemson was the Impressions. They were set up in the southwest corner of Harcombe. I stood right in front of them on the first row. We were eye to eye as I quietly sang along with them. Pretty rich experience making eye contact with Curtis Mayfield and experiencing a sincere connection.
I bet Brubeck was great. This year we watched every episode of the Sopranos. During one of the episode Take Five was playing as background music. That triggered me to pull it up on Spotify and really listen. I was blown away. Listen to it over and over. The timing and the drums are amazing. I envy that you had that experience and that you had that degree of appreciation for jazz at that age.

Impressions

Jan 26, 2022, 9:32 PM

I loved the Impressions as did all.
I saw them in the Clemson mess hall. Lots of acts played there where we ate as it was a big room.
There were "dance weekends'. Home town sweet hearts would come. Folks in the area would put them up. Girls would travel together and all reputations were in tact.

After the college dance finished, off campus was 'Doug Clark and the Hot Nuts'.

I never saw James Brown live, but from what I've seen over the years he lived up to his reputation as "the hardest working man in show business." The way he did everything from booking his own shows to taking care of publicity and writing his own songs (while retaining ownership of them) was incredible. I never knew the TAMI Show concert existed until a couple of years ago. Many of the big names from 1964 (when I was a kid) performed. James was the next to last performer, followed by the Rolling Stones who closed the show. The Stones said it was the worst decision of their careers to follow him. It's around the 1:17.33 mark.
