Call me old school but I am losing my passion for sports. Between politics, the new NIL rules, And all of the politics and the players who feel entitled have taken the true joy out of amateur sports.
Let me know how you feel about the kick off in Charlotte and future kicks offs when the players and the sports begin to change. Money changes people, money will change college sports. IMO players being recruited will start looking at which schools offer them the best opportunities for promoting them because of the NIL money. The increase in attending or watching a sporting event on TV. How much more are you and other fans willing to pay.
I think non student athletes should look for ways to be compensated when they wear Clemson apparel etc… They are basically advertising for the school. Everyone can find a reason that somebody owes them something. We have become a society of Greed and Entitlement. It’s a world gone mad.

What is it about seeing capitalism in action that makes you uncomfortable? Why shouldn't young athletes be able to choose the best financial option for them and their families? You have the freedom to choose to work for any employer that will have you. What is it about these kids that makes you think they shouldn't be able to exercise the same freedoms that you enjoy?

99% of these companies realize that these "endorsements" by all but the biggest names in college sports amount to nothing of value.
Most people aren't going to have their purchasing decisions influenced just because a player on their college team endorses a product, especially if said product isn't already something they typically buy.
Everyone is jumping on the bandwagon now because it's new, but once the dust settles, the real endorsement deals will only be had by a handful of college superstars.
I agree, today is a sad day, not because an endorsement deal here or there is a big deal, but because of the slippery slope we are now playing on. I don't see how it can get anything but worse from here on out.

You are correct Judge. We are headed in a direction and I don’t see how we can turn back.

I imagine they will thank all of their sponsors in the post-game interviews. I just hope they don’t do the hat thing NASCAR does so ever sponsor gets a picture with their player wearing their hat.

Grow up my man, imagine if your neighbor said, "Today is a sad day, because wueagle86 has a job and is allowed to work and make money."
See how absurd that sounds, this isn't political, it's what America was built on, everyone being allowed to make money based on their skills, effort, work-- a meritocracy. The people complaining about NIL should just stop commenting, wash their hands of sports all together if it bothers you so much. It speaks way more about you that it bothers you than anything else, just saying.

Weird, I thought America was also built on the right to express ones views without being shamed for them. Just sayin.

Nope.
Free speech doesn't mean freedom from the consequences of said speech. It just means that the government cannot make laws curtailing your freedom of speech. Some speech deserves to be publicly shamed by peers, just not by laws.
"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

If that is the case- they need to do away with scholarships and make that same football player pay for his own way- the guy that works a Burger King or the girl that works at the bar for tips- are not getting anything. Well maybe a good outlook of what live is really like!

I’m losing interest as well. I can’t imagine how this is going to help teams remain cohesive.

Definitely the end of college athletics. Wonder how long it will be before the athletes who make nothing demand a portion or equal pay of the ones with more marketable names? Or heaven forbid women who make less than men.

it's all about 'me' and how much attention I can get. This isn't new, but boy have we ever gotten better at it!
And it will peck away at the cohesion of 'team' sports.

Do not speak to me about student-athlete again —doe not fit
Semi pro
I have a bad feeling this is the end—maybe for me eventually and I hate it

NIL isn't the problem. It started long ago...
Jul 1, 2021, 8:52 PM
|

when college sports got too big for its britches and money became the primary driver.
When athletic programs and coaches started getting obscene amounts of money, the notion of keeping players as unpaid amateurs became immoral. The Supreme Court got it right. This is America and limiting athletes to just scholarships while everyone else profited hugely is indefensible.
That said, college sports as we've known it is ending. As a result, many of us here will have diminished interest and some may stop watching at all. I may join you. But please understand this had to happen once the beast got too large.
The money train changed everything else about CFB and now it's finally reaching those who made it possible: the players.
I think we all know NIL probably isn't the finish line. Court challenges will be crafted specifically to loosen up the revenue pie even more and it will take several years for cases to run their course.
If you're feeling doom and gloom, I suggest keeping an open mind. Don't give up just yet.
