IMO Dabo's chivalry is impairing our BCS rankings.

Oct 25, 2012, 9:58 PM

We routinely let our foot off the pedal in order to not run up the score and it's hurting our margin of victory, in turn making games appear closer than they should in the eyes of the computer rankings. I'm not specifically referring to this game but rather speaking in general.

If teams have difficulty stopping our offense then that's their problem. There's absolutely no reason to jeopardize our ranking out of niceness & respect for opponents. Apologies if this topic has already been addressed.

Margin of victory isn't factored in bcs anymore.

That is correct, they have no reflection on rankings anymore.

It does affect the AP and the coaches' votes though. This is a part of it

I was under the impression by this NY Times article that

margin of victory indirectly is factored in. See the below quote:

"Though computer rankings can be complex — Sorensen cautions that his method “is not easily explainable to people who have not had linear algebra” — they mostly stick to similar templates. “All have the same general principle but use different mathematical models,” Massey said.

Each team has a number, known as a power ranking. Before two teams play, their rankings are compared to estimate what the margin of victory might be: a team with a power ranking of 100 would be expected to beat one with a ranking of 90 by 10 points. Normally, an additional 3 points is added to the home team, to reflect its inherent advantage. If the actual margin of victory varies from this figure, the power rankings are adjusted for the next week."

Can't tell our competitors not to compete. It's in their DNA.

Yep...he just doesn't have the killer instinct so it's unreasonable

Oct 25, 2012, 10:03 PM

to expect our players to have a killer mentality...something has gotta change

So how does that explain Rutgers & Louisville ranking higher than us in the BCS..... or Ohio ranking higher in the computer poll despite 6 of 7 wins coming against teams with a combined 8-36 record?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I disagree.

Oct 25, 2012, 10:54 PM

I really don't think it was as much Dabo's fault as it was our players. We came out firing, we just weren't really quite as on point as the first half. It looked like our players came out a little less energized and more relaxed, it wasn't that Dabo didn't want to score more.

42-13 is a solid win and will in no way work against us.
