Bates is the Co Defensive Coordinator and Run Game Coordinator.
Valai is the Co Defensive Coordinator and Pass Game Coordinator.
I think this was all a play on titles so he could hire Bates and Valai away from Clemson and Bama and get them pay raises.

It's simple. If you are not confident in your head coaching abilities then you hire away the competition by offering more money and a change in title. You plug and play those co-coordinators into position coach opportunities with more money and elevated title to give them more leverage in the future. If you can't beat them then you buy out your competition...
