Gamecock recruiting and their mascot
Nov 29, 2021, 2:12 PM
|
|
I'm actually asking this seriously. I thought about it today. SC's recruiting has been historically abysmal except, for example, in the Spurrier years when they were also cheating their faces off out of Rock Hill.
So I thought about this. Does their ridiculous mascot actually impede their recruiting? And I'm talking for out of state recruiting where the recruit may not be familiar with them.
Does some kid in Texas or California or Ohio think twice because their mascot is just a chicken? Does their mom tell him that she doesn't want to wear "C0cks" on her shirt? Is it little stuff like that hurts them?
Does it also help bring in punks like Garcia? Those who like that double entendre?
I dunno. The random thoughts I get after another Chicken Kickin'.

And I'm of course familiar with more brand names like Bama and Texas and Ohio State, etc., and I see what you just described from a school that is recruiting me along with the rooster crow and knowing they're a chicken mascot, I'd say, "The #### is this ####?" and not return the coach's calls.

To me, as a recruit going to a USC game, it would feel like

When you were a kid and you always saw the Ringling Brothers circus on TV, and then your parents took you to the Hejaz Shrine Circus, and everything felt at least 50% chintzier than you expected it to be.

recruits come from, riding through Columbia, having the coaches try and chat you up on the way so you don't see what the rest of that chithole looks like, getting all hyped up to go to a game..then you walk in and see a bunch of fire extinguishers go off, some bad fireworks, a chicken jumping around in a cage, and then they all wave a white flag listening to some 20 year old song from a German ghey bar

Ack. How they get ANY out-of-state recruit is pretty dang impressive if you think about it.

or something like that hasn't had a sit down with the board, Athletic Dept., etc. and demanded that the rooster crow be silenced. It's one of the most terrible noises on earth, it's like they're actively trying to #### on their fans. Come watch our ###### football team and listen to this horrific screeching chicken noise while being surrounded in 3rd world country like squalor!

I have long maintained that Carolina women are way more

slooty than your average college chick. Don't get me wrong, there are hoares at every college, but your average Carolina chick seems to have a body count 4-5x that of the normal population. When I'd go down to see my ex gf in Columbia, her roommates would be banging 5-6 different dudes a weekend, their house was like a legit brothel. Maybe there is something about the psychology of having your daughters grow up cheering for the #####, kind of low key grooming them by accident?
I'm genuinely trying to think of a Carolina grad I know/went to school with who doesn't exhibit at least a hint of trashy #### tendencies, and I'm coming up empty. I'm sure there's some I'm missing, but the point is it seems to be the norm down there.

my child's well being if they went there. As in, I'd feel it was one step up from them going to jail for 4-5 years. Best case scenario they get a few STD's(hopefully the curable variety) and are robbed a couple of times, worst case they get shot leaving a bar one night. Or get beaten senseless during a home invasion. All of which are not unlikely scenarios going to college down there for 4 years.
I think my ex gf had her house broken into 3 times while living in Columbia. Not all at one house either, it happened at 2 different locations. If I recall she also had a friend get raped. My best friends brother got pistol whipped during a home invasion, and one guy I went to high school with I believe got stabbed in 5 points. Of the fairly small sample size of people that I knew who went there, they all had at least one fairly severe incident while enrolled. I think the most innocuous incident was somebody coming out to all 4 tires being slashed and the entire vehicle being keyed.

Had to think about it, but the last time I went down there

to visit her was almost 12 years ago now. Just to further solidify my point, my gf at the time and I ended up breaking up because she didn't see anything wrong with staying in a tent with 3 dudes at Bonnaroo for however long the festival lasted. Obviously I was a sexist control freak for objecting, so that was that. But I knew she was a #### going in, it was just my turn and I smashed that pooty the best I could while I could.
Most of those girls don't look real great anymore, I haven't really kept up with any of them but they'll pop up in my facebook feed from time to time. Interestingly enough, most of them seemed to congregate in the NoDa area of Charlotte.

I think #### has an appeal for some of their students, but for their recruits, I'm pretty sure it comes down to "do you want to wash cars, or play for a college that has a chicken as a mascot?" In other words, limited options.
